Serious question - I saw this year that buyers were paying per pound for beaver pelts and then just using them for felt. If that is the case, why not just use clippers to remove all the fur from the carcass and sell it by the pound? I understand the weight of the hide, but if the hide isn't being used, then the price per pound for sheared fur would be higher. I could process a beaver much quicker doing this than skinning and stretching, just to have it clipped later. Sometimes my mind wanders at work...

Guard hairs arent used for felt, just the underfur,so I think felters probably would rather do the collection from the hides themselves than have bags full of valueless guard hair.

A fella should live trap them, shave them and let them go, maybe. Shave that beaver .

As I understand it the skin is ground up and boiled with the fur as a glue (mucilage) to hold all together.

Trim the guard hair, but no shave for a beaver. That could be cruelty to the beaver, especially in a cold northern state.

6 bucks apiece is better than tossing the hide if you are skinning them for meat anyway.
