This company sells carp. I don't get it. Why would anyone buy carp? I complained to Theisen's last year. This year I see their note says they aren't selling them in Wi. Hmmm. I just can't imagine any state allowing this. Wi sure is trying hard to get rid of carp.

Pond grass management. Triploids are safe to put in ponds...assuming they are triploid(if not someone's gonna be in trouble) as those look to be asian carp.

Those indeed look to be Asian carp... seriously bad news to be selling to the public... or anyone for that matter.

I tried telling them they shouldn't be selling 'em. I felt like they blew me off. 'Course the website says their 2 Wi stores aren't selling them this year. I feel sorry for the Iowa folks though (this store is based in Iowa). Anyone putting these in their pond is making a big mistake in my opinion. Great store, but drives me crazy they sell these devils.

Triploids are sterile, if that is what they are selling. Though that should be in the description if that is what they are selling.

Not to say anyone should be selling them, either the asian carp or the grass carp....but.....from what I have been told they can't re-produce in standing water. Such as ponds or lakes. I think those pictured are grass carp. The young Silvers and big heads look like shad at that size.

Bold letters at this link say Harrison Fishery Grass Carp- at http://harrisonfishery.com/stockingConsiderations.htm it says that white amur do not reproduce in ponds nor lakes.
As far as I have been able to determine all carp originate in Asia, although we got our common carp by way of Germany.

If it is legal and there is money to be made some one will do it.

Don't all lakes have rivers and creeks feeding them?

Not all lakes are fed by another body of water, mostly man made lakes are feederless though there are some natural ones.

I think USFWS does the certification on each lot of triploid carp. If one of the carp isnt triploid, the lot fails.

Those in the picture are grass carp They have big scales .they eat plants and do not jump when startled . "Asian " carp have tiny scales like a salmon ,are filter feeders they eat plankton and floating algae. The term ASIAN is a misnomer the correct names for the fish most call ASIAN are actually two species Silver Carp and Bighead carp. All grass carp sold are triploid they are sterilized while in the egg . They are very good at keeping the weeds down in your pond .

Grass carp have been used for vegetation control for decades. How is this news to anyone?

I bought 3 grass carp from Harrison. They keep my pond pretty clean. They also get big and fat. One died in a neighbor's pond and it weighed about 30 pounds. They don't reproduce.

I guess this is what I based my thinking on.
https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/surfacewater/datasets/AIS/GC/
Maybe there's some breed of grass carp that are ok. If so, I wasn't aware of it.

It's why I keep saying triploid carp are ok to stock as they are sterile.

The carp they are selling are sterile . there are already wild grass carp reproducing in many of the rivers there have been since the early nineteen hundreds .They sure don't want people packing around wild fertile grass carp to watersheds they aren't already in . You should only stock certified triploid sterile grass carp .

They are Grass Carp (White Amur) which are sold by just about every commercial fish hatchery around the country. As mentioned, most states require that they are certified triploid which are not capable of reproduction. Most state fisheries managers strongly recommend their use opposed to chemicals for the control of some aquatic vegetation. They are very effective at weed control when young but become less effective with age. They can live 20+ years.

Almost all carp are Asian in origin including common carp. The Silver Carp and Black Carp are the ones causing all of the problems and are banned around the US.

Ok, thanks for explaining. I wasn't aware, until this thread, that there was such a thing as carp that proved to be sterile.

A pond near me got stocked with bluegill that were supposed to be sterile, but they weren't.
I think Wi just took the view that they don't trust sterile fish, which is probably why this store only sells the carp at their Iowa stores.

x2 They are VERY common around here. Most farm ponds and most all lakes have them monsters swimming around. We have used them for bait after they escaped the lakes nearby into small creeks...

I was talking to a retired WDNR fish manager. He said 'sterile' carp are not to be trusted. Too big of a risk that a couple non sterile ones will end up in the batch. That seems to be the opinion of the state, too, Wisconsin at least.
