Just had a friend of mine sell all of his milk cows. The milk company decided he was too far away to pick up his milk. Last I heard, he was only getting $10 per 100 wt. for his milk. That was before they took out a few perks. From what I was told he was only getting about $4.00 a hundred weight. Figure that by the gallon & see what the store & middleman are making.

The milk must have been sold into a very unprotected market, maybe grade B if there are Grade B plants in IN. Also to lower the price from 10 to $ per CWT those had to be agreed upon deductions, most of which may be loan payments that are paid directly to creditors via the milk plant an thus lowering the net check. Most of those are not based on CWT payments but an exact amount each month.

I paid $1.49 a gallon at Aldis last week for milk and $1.00 per half gallon at Kroger last night. Kroger had gallons of milk for $2.50. I don't know why anyone would buy a gallon, when 2 half gallons is cheaper.

I know a farmer, Tony, who Madco does some work for, who had 8500 dairy cows being milked, 8000 getting close to being milked, 5700 hogs and over 2 million laying hens, the last time I talked to him about it. He has his own feed plants that are fully automated and uses very large numbers of Mexicans. It would be very hard for a small farmer to compete.

Dairy farming sure is bad around here these days.

The local farm that was scheduled to host our county's annual June 'On the Farm' Dairy breakfast went belly up this month. The bank cut it off.
