I made mine 10ft high, as high as I can get. I used a 2500lb atv winch for pulling. Just hook up to a battery charger instead of messing with a battery. Also use cables to pull with, like Beav has explained instead of vice grips. The cables have never slipped yet.

Build a horizontal set up. Mount the winch on one end of a 2X12 plank. Build It up so It's about 4" higher then the planks surface. Then on the other end do the same with a slip noose.

Know you can just lay the rig over a couple of saw horses and your good to go. Or if you have a bench In your fur shed you can use your bench instead of a plank.

Actually I prefer a horizontal puller over that of a vertical set up.
