This was 25 paces and #4 shot. I loaded 120 grains by volume of Pyrodex. I used an 82 grain by volume powder measure for the shot. No clue how many ounces that is but it has a lot of recoil. I greased one side of a 3X3 inch cleaning patch and used a ball starter to push the patch into the barrel. left some sticking out. Filled the center with shot, folded the part sticking out the barrel onto the shot and rammed it onto the powder. Had to do that twice to get all the shot in. I think it would work fine as a turkey load or rabbit or squirrel. Don't know if its legal though for turkey. I will have to find out. Anyway I thought it was pretty cool and was surprised how well it seems to work.

We'd call that a Street Sweeper

Probably should have put something up to show target size. That's a ten inch square piece of paper. Don't think anyone would call it a street sweeper.

If that's thru a rifled barrel, it's better than i expected.

Yeah its rifled. Surprised me too. Got bored wanted to see what would happen. Tried bb's first but when I found the patch wasn't much left of it so I know they were in contact with the barrel. Didn't think steel bbs would do it any good. Then I remembered that half full coffee can of #4 lead. Didn't find the patchs I used for the lead shot but I don't see how they could damage anything being lead even if the patch isn't holding up.

Yepper. Rifled barrel. Surprised me.
I weighed the amount of shot I used and it was close to 1 1/8 ounce. I had to load up a patch twice for one shot. Heres how I did the patch. after I put some shot in I folded the rest of the patch over on itself. I used a small dowel rod to gently push shot in the patch without actually pushing it further into the barrel. I greased the bottom of the patch with Thompson center bore butter and held the shot nicely. I was afraid it would all come lose but it didn't even when I tipped the gun over barrel down.

Anybody else ever do this? Thinking my old muzzle loader just got a lot more versatile.

Yea, i wouldn't try steel shot if you value the rifling in your gun.

What kind of penetration did you get?

Havn't got that far. Started raining waggler. It really kicked though. Thinking I need to go down to the same amount by volume of powder as the shot. 82 grain measure. What would be a good penetration test?

lebanon mo,
They have over powder wads for every caliber of rifle at track of the Wolf that might help some . My buddy puts shot in a paper homemade tube almost like a paper cartridge but with shot and has good results .

Never seen shot shot through a rifled barrel, so I don’t know if thats good or bad. But I wouldn’t shoot at a turkey with it beyond 15-20 yards, if that.

My Dad got on a BP revolver kick, and had 2 .45 calibers. He reamed the rifling out of one of them and kept it loaded with 7 1/2 shot. It would kill a stripped gopher. He shot those pistols a lot.

That was how my Dad loaded his. He had a punch that he cut his own cards with. Seems like he used two between the powder and shot.

M.Magis If I do use shot to hunt with will be squirrels or rabbits. I THINK the game warden would believe me I had that rifle loaded with shot. If not I could shoot it for him. Just rather not fool with it. May not be legal either. I don't think 50 caliber is quite 20 gauge which is the minimum shotgun size. See where pedersoli has a new shotgun though. 12 gauge double with exposed hammers and one trigger. My great Uncle had a side by side 12 cartridge gun with two hammers and one trigger. Only one I ever saw. Calling this new gun a plains shotgun.

Maybe try a 28 gauge wad or patched 28 gauge wad.

That patch must be working to protect the shot. Guessing the patch rides the rifling without transferring the spin.
Would not have thought it would work out so well.
