I wise man once told me "Its not how strong you are, its how long you can be strong..."

I cant bench press 300 lbs or squat 500, but I have a motor that will go for hours.. I run, I do OCR (obstacle course races) practice jiu-jitsu and at 48 I can hold my own... I'm 5'10 at weigh 165 lbs. I have a 30" waist....

I eat pretty cleanly but I'm not a fanatic. I don't recover like I did when I was in my 20's and 30's, nor is my metabolism as fast, hard lessons for me to learn.

Strength to me is a "relative" term... I have buddies of mine that are big into weightlifting, strong guys, but they cant do 10 pullups (palm forward) or do 5 ring dips.... When I give them a 5 gallon bucket with no handle full of gravel to pack up a hill and tell them they cant put it on their shoulder either, they struggle... But, they can bench press 400 lbs....

Do what keeps you happy.... Run, lift weights, do Crossfit, yoga or whatever.. To each his own...

Many years ago, I was into power lifting. Those were the years when steroids were the thing. It was tough to compete against those who used them. Arnold, Lou, and some of the best bodybuilders didn't get that way without drugs.

I knew one guy who regularly squatted 575, benched over 400, and could deadlift 600. He took a truckload of steroids, pills and injections. I've heard he had both knees replaced in his late 40s. It's the joints that go first.
Although, I tore both biceps doing deadlifts. Today, everything is drug-free. They test to make sure. That's the way it should be.

I still go to the gym Monday - Friday and take weekends off. I lift for reps, not weight about 40 minutes worth. Then, I do 30 minutes of cardio. I always found during trapping season I didn't need to go to the gym. Trapping was a tough enough workout.

There is a guy at the local gym, he is 50 years old, and he can bench 550lbs and he deadlifts 650lbs. I would be shocked if he takes steroids. He does not look like arnold or lou, in fact he looks like bob the minion from dispicable me lol Point is, you can get very strong without steroids. The guy I know competes in the show me state games and has finished 1st in his class most years. He doesnt look strong, but he is strong as an ox. Something else I learned, big difference in looking strong and being strong. I have seen guys who are "ripped" struggle to lift the bar.

And I agree about trapping season, I don't workout during, trapping is the best workout (minus all the gas station pizza lol)

I just started working out on the 16th.

Cut my carbs going to the gym m-f and watching portions. Stopped my beer intake almost completely had a couple over the weekend but not the 12 pack or more I used too.

Don't tell my wife but I do feel better and seem to have more energy during the day. But man do I hate that 4:30 am alarm. She lost over 60 lbs last year and works out 5 to 6 days a week. Up at 3:45 every morning and at the gym by 5 for her.

Not really sure what I'm doing at this point but I do a 45 min circuit on machines and steps at the gym m-w-f along with 20 mins of tread mill. T-T I do 30 on the treadmill and the ab machines they have there. Started last night with sit-ups and plank before bed. After just one week of no/low carbs had a burger last night and man it sure made me sluggish today.

Abdominal crunches only count if they're intentional. Nice try, though. grin

You cannot outrun or outwork a bad diet. I need to eat better. A body builder I know gave me a very simple diet.

No white flour.

No white sugar.

There you go.

Bingo !

My workout today was lifting six 8" and 10" Ductile Iron gate valves onto a pallet, followed by six complete DI valve boxes and various 8" and 10" DI fittings. Back is feeling it.

Maintaining a moderate body fat %, good relative strength, flexibility, agility, good long duration cardio and good high intensity cardio levels is not easy......especially if your over 55.

smile

But, if you do your overall quality of life is much better.

Another thing to consider is that as you age you not only produce less testosterone but what you do produce can turn to estrogen and that turns to fat. Broccoli contains a blocker that helps to stop that conversion. This conversion mostly happens at night so a few cups of broccoli before bed may do some good.

Broccoli is good......I use fresh frozen, steam in microwave and add cheddar sauce.

Yummy.

If you have not looked at the Gracie Diet, I would. I lost over fifty pounds since the first of the year and feel better than I ever have in my life. Check it out.

I just started weight lifting a little while ago, and my only benchmark so far has been squatting 100% of my body weight (5 sets of 5), but still increasing steadily from there.

There’s no magic diet or one workout that’s gonna be a permanent fix to anything. Low carb is great for cutting weight and leaning down, but you eventually gotta start giving you’re body some fuel, or you’re gonna run out of energy and your body is going to start eating muscle to try n provide that energy. It take a lifestyle change and commitment for anything permanent. You don’t need to go to the gym either, and you don’t have to run, but it sure helps the whole process along. Most folks on here are hunters, you want to get lean, loose weight. Eat venison, not sausage, straight up venison, lean ground, it don’t matter. Eat as much as you want. You don’t have to grill it, if u want to fry it, fry it straight up in olive oil no, flour. Eat vegetables with it, in fact eat vegetables with every meal. Eat eggs, yolks and all. For carbs, eat brown rice and black beans. Allow your self some fruit like bannnans or apples, but don’t go over board, they have sugar too. You get tired of venison, mix it up with some salmon, tuna, or tilapia. Once again, no white flours, no white rice, no sugars or white breads.
As far as workouts, any of you guys that burn wood, start cutting right now, every chance you get, and keep going right through summer. The hottest, humid, nasty days, get out there and cut, stack, and split. Your giving yourself a full body workout, HIT, cardio all at once, and if you’re sticking to a clean diet, you’ll melt fat off, build muscle, and start seeing, and feeling results rather quick. There’s a lot more one can do, but that’s a general game plan that I can garuntee if one stays committed, you’ll see the results you want and over time, feel years younger and healthier.
That’s my rant for what it’s worth

Oatmeal, whole grain breads and sweet potatoes are great healthy carb choices for energy.

That right Marty, I eat oatmeal every morning, it’s my favorite meal of the day. I ad a heaping spoon of almond butter, a couple tablespoons of ground flax seed, a pile of frozen blueberries, and sprinkle on some cinnamon. It gets you some good carbs and a protein load to start your day
