A few years back I got into a little recreational power lifting. I wanted to bench press 300lbs. It took me about a year to get there once I found the program that worked for me (After 2 years of winging it). I used the DUP method and once a guy at the gym explained it to me. I would max, then every week the program would tell me what % of the max weight I would be lifting that week. I did upper body Mon & Thurs, lower body Tues and Fri. Off days Wed, Sat & Sun. I'd do that 8 weeks, take a week off, max out, rinse and repeat. The most weight I ever did was 347lbs on the bench press, deadlifted 410lbs, squatted 375lbs. Here is a picture of when my 1st son was born, and I was at my absolute strongest. One of my favorite pictures. A very proud moment (1st time dad), and I was lean and mean, big arms, big chest, broad shoulders, small waist! Took a long time to gain it, not so long to lose most of it lol still workout 2-4 times a week, still pretty strong, but I cant touch the numbers I posted above lol Lot harder to find the time to lift and the ability to eat as healthy with 2 sons now. Plus I just seem to be tired all the time lol As far as overall health, I would say I feel better now, I was lifting some pretty heavy weights regularly and my joints were killing me and I was constantly knocking my hips out of alignment, I was going to the chiro once a month. Now I just do pretty basic strength trainng and I feel a lot better. Motivation was as simple as wanting to bench press 300lbs and deadlift 400lbs. Once I hit 300 I shot for 350, but couldnt quite hit that before we started having kids. Was proud of my accomplishments. Any kind of working out is a lot of hard work and dedication. That's my story

My motivation is health and staying off medication.
If I'm running, something is chasing me. lol So, I walk.
I don't want bulk so I'm high rep low weight. Squats and push ups are the bulk of my work out.
I don't have fancy equipment so I use the steps in the house. I start at the forth step with push ups, which at that level are more like curls, 100 reps. Then move to the step at my chest, another 100. Then above my head, another 100. Then work my way back down. Every other day.
The off days I do squats and balance, no weight.
Dropped 20 lbs. and maintaining.

since February, I'm down 25 pounds. still have 50 to go to get where I want to be.
I don't run, if you see me running try to keep up, something bad is happening back there.
diet and exercise. I've removed all processed food (other than an occassional beverage), and am sticking to mostly lean meats and fresh veggies. exercise is a warm up walk, then bowflex every other day, followed by a cool down walk...and I try to get 10,000 steps in every day.
on the bowflex i do a program of leg curls, leg extension, bicep curls, bench press, shoulder press, pull down, and resistance crunches. I adjust the resistance so that I'm able to do between 8 and 12 reps. once I"m able to do 12, I bump the resistance up. I mix in some other exercises when the urge hits
i track my food, water, and exercise using myfitness app. this really helps me be accountable to myself.
my motivation - i want to put my boots on and still be able to breathe at the same time. closing in on 40, I also know that its only going to get harder as I get older.
my only measurements are the scale and the waistline. i guess i track the resistance on the bowflex too, but I don't think it translates to real pounds

Yup I do use your same motivation. I will most likely never return to the power lifting, right now I just want to keep an above average strength and be able to play with my kids without geting winded and/or hurting myself lol

My diet was very simple, I stayed under 20 grams of sugar per day and under 40g of saturated fats. Only supplement that I took was protein. I tried to take 1 gram of protein for every pound I weighed, I was 220lbs, so 220g of protein per day. Seen where some guys take 2 grams for every pound, I don't think my body would of allowed that lol someone said above "Listen to your body". Wise words and great advice.
Trapping and weight lifting are surprisingly similar, there is no magic concoction (Even though everyone is looking for one). The only secret to being successful at either is hard work and dedication. It' really is that simple.
I guess you could say steroids are the magic concocion lol but don't do steroids, drugs are bad mmkay

I don't get caught up into the supplement gimmicks so I stay away from them. I am all natural and I believe in eating my meals and not drinking my meals. I agree. I tried tons of stuff, all it ever did was make me have expensive pee. I struggled to take in the amount of protein I needed, so I did supplement that. Racer, what are your thoughts on protein? How much do you intake? Eat it all or supplement some?

Good info racer, and thanks for sharing. When I 1st started I really tried to eat my protein, but it made me nauseus. I ate so much canned tuna that I can't even touch the stuff now. I switched to the optimum brand Gold standard extreme chocolate milk powder. I would take 2 scoops mixed with 2-3 cups of milk and that would put me at about 70g of protein iirc. I'd take one for breakfast, and one after my workouts. I tried alot of the stuff you mentioned hunter, and I felt it just did not work for me. Like trappin, there is no right or wrong way, you just have to find the system that works for you, but when I see or read about someone who is picking up 400lbs I wanna hear there system, never know what you may add to your arsenal

Way to go Darien. Very cool.
I have been working on leaning down. You know me and what I look like.
I've been doing body weight squats every other day, and pushups every day. Sounds silly, but weather permitting, I skateboard on lunch break. Not cruising around, but doing tricks.
In addition, drinking lots of water, black coffee, or black tea (no calories). Watching the portion control at supper time, and a cup of green tea before I bed down for the night.
Went down a hole on my belt, and about 14 lbs.

exercise almost daily....although I just took off 20 days from everything except a 1/2 hr cardio session for 12 of those days.
Today will be 15 sets for back here shortly and 4 mile ruck hike on the road just after dark this evening. Work in between that.

I wise man once told me "Its not how strong you are, its how long you can be strong..."
I cant bench press 300 lbs or squat 500, but I have a motor that will go for hours.. I run, I do OCR (obstacle course races) practice jiu-jitsu and at 48 I can hold my own... I'm 5'10 at weigh 165 lbs. I have a 30" waist....
I eat pretty cleanly but I'm not a fanatic. I don't recover like I did when I was in my 20's and 30's, nor is my metabolism as fast, hard lessons for me to learn.
Strength to me is a "relative" term... I have buddies of mine that are big into weightlifting, strong guys, but they cant do 10 pullups (palm forward) or do 5 ring dips.... When I give them a 5 gallon bucket with no handle full of gravel to pack up a hill and tell them they cant put it on their shoulder either, they struggle... But, they can bench press 400 lbs....
Do what keeps you happy.... Run, lift weights, do Crossfit, yoga or whatever.. To each his own...

Many years ago, I was into power lifting. Those were the years when steroids were the thing. It was tough to compete against those who used them. Arnold, Lou, and some of the best bodybuilders didn't get that way without drugs.
I knew one guy who regularly squatted 575, benched over 400, and could deadlift 600. He took a truckload of steroids, pills and injections. I've heard he had both knees replaced in his late 40s. It's the joints that go first. Although, I tore both biceps doing deadlifts. Today, everything is drug-free. They test to make sure. That's the way it should be.
I still go to the gym Monday - Friday and take weekends off. I lift for reps, not weight about 40 minutes worth. Then, I do 30 minutes of cardio. I always found during trapping season I didn't need to go to the gym. Trapping was a tough enough workout.

There is a guy at the local gym, he is 50 years old, and he can bench 550lbs and he deadlifts 650lbs. I would be shocked if he takes steroids. He does not look like arnold or lou, in fact he looks like bob the minion from dispicable me lol Point is, you can get very strong without steroids. The guy I know competes in the show me state games and has finished 1st in his class most years. He doesnt look strong, but he is strong as an ox. Something else I learned, big difference in looking strong and being strong. I have seen guys who are "ripped" struggle to lift the bar. And I agree about trapping season, I don't workout during, trapping is the best workout (minus all the gas station pizza lol)

I accidentally did a abdominal crunch getting up from my easy chair yesterday, does that count? lol Abdominal crunches only count if they're intentional. Nice try, though.

Want to live long? Take more naps! Chill out and don't fret over small stuff. The heart is only good for so many beats. How many marathon runners have lived to 100 ? With that said it's also about what you put past the teeth and how much you put past the teeth ! You cannot outrun or outwork a bad diet. I need to eat better. A body builder I know gave me a very simple diet. No white flour. No white sugar. There you go. Bingo !

My workout today was lifting six 8" and 10" Ductile Iron gate valves onto a pallet, followed by six complete DI valve boxes and various 8" and 10" DI fittings. Back is feeling it.

Maintaining a moderate body fat %, good relative strength, flexibility, agility, good long duration cardio and good high intensity cardio levels is not easy......especially if your over 55. But, if you do your overall quality of life is much better. Another thing to consider is that as you age you not only produce less testosterone but what you do produce can turn to estrogen and that turns to fat. Broccoli contains a blocker that helps to stop that conversion. This conversion mostly happens at night so a few cups of broccoli before bed may do some good.

I just started weight lifting a little while ago, and my only benchmark so far has been squatting 100% of my body weight (5 sets of 5), but still increasing steadily from there.

There’s no magic diet or one workout that’s gonna be a permanent fix to anything. Low carb is great for cutting weight and leaning down, but you eventually gotta start giving you’re body some fuel, or you’re gonna run out of energy and your body is going to start eating muscle to try n provide that energy. It take a lifestyle change and commitment for anything permanent. You don’t need to go to the gym either, and you don’t have to run, but it sure helps the whole process along. Most folks on here are hunters, you want to get lean, loose weight. Eat venison, not sausage, straight up venison, lean ground, it don’t matter. Eat as much as you want. You don’t have to grill it, if u want to fry it, fry it straight up in olive oil no, flour. Eat vegetables with it, in fact eat vegetables with every meal. Eat eggs, yolks and all. For carbs, eat brown rice and black beans. Allow your self some fruit like bannnans or apples, but don’t go over board, they have sugar too. You get tired of venison, mix it up with some salmon, tuna, or tilapia. Once again, no white flours, no white rice, no sugars or white breads. As far as workouts, any of you guys that burn wood, start cutting right now, every chance you get, and keep going right through summer. The hottest, humid, nasty days, get out there and cut, stack, and split. Your giving yourself a full body workout, HIT, cardio all at once, and if you’re sticking to a clean diet, you’ll melt fat off, build muscle, and start seeing, and feeling results rather quick. There’s a lot more one can do, but that’s a general game plan that I can garuntee if one stays committed, you’ll see the results you want and over time, feel years younger and healthier. That’s my rant for what it’s worth

Oatmeal, whole grain breads and sweet potatoes are great healthy carb choices for energy. That right Marty, I eat oatmeal every morning, it’s my favorite meal of the day. I ad a heaping spoon of almond butter, a couple tablespoons of ground flax seed, a pile of frozen blueberries, and sprinkle on some cinnamon. It gets you some good carbs and a protein load to start your day

Last year at this time I was doing 200 sit ups in two sets before I got out of bed. I would then drop to the floor and do 60 push ups in two sets. After having my coffee and banana for breakfast I would then proceed to the basement where I would do 25 pull ups in two sets and then to the weight bench where I would press 100# 20 times in two sets (I suck at this). My last exercise was to curl 50# 180 times in three sets. I was then ready for my bike ride where I would ride 24 miles (round trip) to have my bottle of water and a cheese stick and summer sausage pieces with my girlfriend at her workplace. I do this daily when it's not raining from April until November. After arriving home I would then have a bowl of popcorn along with a hard boiled egg and a can of tuna and another bottle of water. For supper I would then have any danged thing I wanted but it was usually meat and potatoes and vegetables of one kind or another.I will have chocolate chip cookies for desert. I injured my left shoulder last year and this year I am only doing my bike rides so far. I will be 72 in October. I am 165 now at 5'9" and hope to get back to 157 by the end of summer. I have a lot of winter fat to lose.
Just writing this down wore me out.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

At 52 I run 30-35 miles a week, eat lots of veggies fruits, etc. Have ran 15 half marathons, 2 fulls, and will run my third full marathon next weekend in Lincoln and two more half's rest of the year. I don't ever want to get old or heavy. Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

For indoor cardio I like the walking on the stairmaster while hammer curling dumbells the whole time...really gets the heartrate and breathing up. It has a very high suck factor.

I exercise to stay in shape and that to keep my bodyfat % down. But diet is still important. Want to loose about 8# over the next month. That will put me at 204#, 6' tall and around 15% bodyfat. the every other day intense cardio will drop pounds if I eat right plus I ruck hike 2x a week and swim an hour 2x a week....lift and bodyweight resistance every other day. Its a pretty complete program...the ruck and swim is duration orientated and the stairmaster is high intensity short duration...15 minutes with a few minute breaks when I cannot breath anymore.. ..that varies per workout and as I use heavier dumbells it is a shorter time before break. Keep increasing as possible in everything and take a few days off here and there as necessary for recuperation. That's not bad for my age which is 61.

The only thing I admit to not knowing...my own strength A lot of truth here. Lifting heavy is just as much if not more of a mental game than a physical game. When I train to bench over 400 pounds I work myself up to it a couple weeks prior. I eat more and prepare my mind. If your not prepared mentally it's not happening. It's not all about how much you lift or how many reps you do to be healthy. It's putting all three of the pieces of the puzzle together to succeed. Nutrition, weight lifting, cardio. And lifting as long as I have and getting older I think one more puzzle piece should be added and that's stretching. I did stretch over the years but looking back I should of done more. As we age we lose mobility of joints and weight lifting takes its toll as well.

345 or 350, I can't remember which for sure on bench. 475 or 480 squats. Took me a little over a year. I weighed 212 pounds and I was about 24 years old. Man I miss those days. I don't think I could ever get back there now I'm sure to get an injury or something. Another thing I remember once I got that. I hit a plateau that I just couldn't rise above no matter how hard or how long I trained for. If I was to do it different I would have changed up my lifting in training doing different types of lifts in different ways. But whatever. It was fun

Lots of good stuff here. Sounds like lots of committed and motivated people. For anyone looking to really burn fat, build muscle, tone up, and get some good cardio all at once; look into some kettlebell workouts. I’d advise being in some kind of decent shape before you attempt it though, you can also hurt yourself in a hurry if you don’t know what you’re doing. If I could only do one thing at this point, it’d be my kettlebells. They’re extremely versatile and you can get a complete body workout using them with the correct exercises.
Not everyone likes me, but not everyone matters

keeps your mind in the game challenging yourself to do more.
Something to try when you have your heartrate pretty elevated is doing random math problems...this teaches you to be able to think and solve problems when under extreme stress. I pick numbers off the machine display and add or multiply them. or divide the caloric counter into the minutes exercised displayed on the machine.....whatever....it really works for this 'mental' training.

Yes, it does occupy your mind but it also trains your mind to be able to problem solve under extreme stress. Doing math problems mentally while your heartrate is pretty elevated is not easy. but it gets easier if you do it often. There is a noticeable difference after a while of doing it.
This mental training can translate to being able to think better in a bad situation that you may find yourself in.
It really works well.

They are not my kind of workout but probably a smarter workout than just a weightlifter. Kettlebells can be a whole body workout which gives you strength and conditioning.
