Favorite traps are probably liking asking what's your favorite truck. Everyone has a different opinion. Thought I'd ask you experienced guys what trap you like best. And why is it your favorite?

I'm a relative newbie and need to buy some more traps this year and your feedback would be helpful.

What kind of soil makeup in your area should be taken into account.I like longsprings but we have a lot of sand up here,if I lined somewhere with a lot of clay or heavy dirt I'd feel different.Having said that I like a no.4 longspring modified as in laminated, offset and base plated.

I am fond of Sterling 600s, but don't use them in high theft areas as they are pricey . When a yote steps on the pan, he is waiting when I get there. They are also easy to get bedded solid, they almost bed themselves. They aren't exactly a cheap starter trap, but they are a one time purchase trap. I know folks that have been using the same traps hard since the 70s, and still going strong.

KO K9 Extreme, and jakes. I've used pretty much all #3 long springs made and most coil springs made from 1.5 to a 3. The extremes and the jakes fit my set up the best, plus they work great with very little maintenance, and that's what I want.

Favorite yote trap? I guess it would be,the one he steps in. Because they all catch yotes. Lol. But seriously, find what fit's you're trapping style and weather and soil. Buy what you will, but remember, practice, practice, practice. Jmo

No bs k9 extreme jr. We can't use the bigger one here but they would also be a good option if non targets weren't a problem.

I am liking the Victor Montgomery series myself. I have #2 and #4 2coiled offset traps. I like the simplicity and that they are nice and light, and bed nicely...also, I like a round jawed trap .

The last three years i've been running the full mod #3 Bridger dogless.65% #3,30% Sterling MJ 600 and 5% MB 550's,love the Sterling they only get used in the SAFE locations.

Over the last three years I have used Duke #2 square and round jaws, Duke #3's, Duke #4's, Vic #3 and #4 dls, Montana #2's, and #3's, MB 550's, MB 650's, and finally No Bs Extremes. I have caught coyotes in all of them, and like all of them except MB650's. Sold the 650's. When the dirt is nice I use my longs, if I need to squeeze a trap into a tight place it's the round jaw #2's, if I have a back door digger I use a 550. The one that gets used 99% of the time is the No Bs trap. Its pan size and over all dimension covers a lot of ground. It also gives me good leverage to set and bed the trap with out having to put a lot of stress on my hands. The power is important in my conditions to get through the mud, which is often stuck to the jaws. I also like the low pan, and the fact that it has good pan tension with out having to tighten the pan bolt. After having used all of these different traps, if I where to start over I would choose #4 Duke off set with pit pan and rod dog for my main trap. And #2 Montana with the addition of a rod dog for my back up trap. I think a trap is like any other tool, in that you have to learn how to use the tool you choose. Hope my rambling helps.

Compared to when I was a Kid, trappers today have so many great trap choices. I would visit a trap dealer or go to a trapping convention so you see for yourself what you like. If you are not near a trap dealer with selection or a trapping convention try some of the recommendations here but buy one of a few different ones to see what you like the best. All will work but you have to choose for your state laws, soils, time of year, budget and 10 other variables relevant to you. I see folks sometimes thinking used traps are a deal; when they could be very close in some cases for new traps with full strength.

For me with a lot of fox around with the coyotes I will almost always grab MB-550's Straight Jaw, I long ago lost track of how many toe caught bore coon, coyote and fox I've held by not using offset, not to mention little damage with those wide cast jaws. I don't have a lot of time to mess with equipment and I take them out of the box ready to be dyed and waxed.

I don’t know if it’s the nostalgia or it just looks cool to see a coyote with a 3 or 4 double long spring bracelet ! But these days I like and use an mb 650 , but they mostly all catch coyotes .

Taxi. B&L #2 was like the Victor #2 square jaw. Except had a round pan. Darn good trap when beefed and modded.

Thanks Andy. For the life of me,I can't remember that trap but should have.I wonder if these were made after Victor bought B+L,I think,in the '70's?I do remember the 1 1/2 B+L coils, which looked just like the Victors except no V cut in the pan.

I don't think the #2 was made after Vic bought B+L, I tried back then to find some without that V cut out on the pan but they weren't available. So I went with the B+L 1.5..

I remember buying a new dozen in the early 80's. A couple years later the coyote showed up and turned them into scrap iron. A few years after that I learned to modify. Baseplate, jaw lams & bubble tipped. JC Conner lightning springs. Super fast, layed flat. Good traps.

Sounds like they were made by Victor.Looking at pictures, they look like the Victor #2's of that era, including the chain, pan different pan,of course.

I stand corrected, I'm old lol. I did not like what those old 2s did to fox/coon feet, but I wasn't a modifier back then, most of mine ended up looking like crushed cans, the rest went to the mink line.

Me and footholds for coyotes dont get along but I did have one luckily stumble into one this season ..heres my favorite
Using a new setup this next year , 5/64 lock on 1/16 cable , senneker spring and trigger . These ones have regular spring but will try a few magnums as well .
