Leuopold rings and bases, and 140 sierra SBT You do your part they will do the rest. 2700fps is plenty, not a gnat's eyebrows difference from the 7x57. Try IMR4350 or AA4350. Been a lot of elk reduced to possession with the 7x57. If you can shoot its plenty of gun. To much gun for coyote IMO unless you use reduced velocity handloads. Pm me if you want a starting point for the reduced velocity loads.

The 6.5 will do its part if you do yours. To many guys spend all kinds of money on a hunting trip then buy the cheapest ammo they can find, don't be one of those guys. Your bullet is what is going to do the deed, choose wisely and don't skimp. If it was me I would go with 140 gr barnes 1st or another deep penetration, slower expansion bullet. Elk are tough, good luck and have fun.

Elk are tough, good luck and have fun. Agreed 100%. The biggest thing with light calibers and big animals is that one must be extremely selective about shot placement. With a 6.5, animals quartering away will have to be passed due to reduced penetration, whereas a good .300 WinMag load would perform fine and a shot like that could be humanely taken. I would use nothing less that premium Barnes bullets for larger animals. One of my students culls for a trophy hunting ranch and kills 2 lesser bulls a year with his .260, the 6.5 CM's predecessor and ballistic twin. He uses Barnes bullets as suggested above and carefully places his shots broadside. Every elk he shoots is cleanly killed and quickly recovered. He has recovered bullets under the hide on the far side that have opened up perfectly, which not only demonstrates the high performance level of Barnes bullets, but also demonstrates the limits of penetration. FWIW, a .22 Long Rifle will fully penetrate a deer's ribcage area with a good broadside lung shot, while a .260/6.5 will only drive a bullet almost through an elk on the same broadside shot.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

GCPete, what makes those Vortex rings/mounts "no lap?" There was nothing in the Midway add description that claimed perfect alignment w/o lapping. The only product I have used that didn't need lapping is the Burris Signature rings with the poly inserts.
. agreed, but I've learned to NEVER rely on a middle man/distributor to give all pertinent data. Go to the makers website for details.
