I was a fry them type but me and my daughter Will eat all I can cook sauttee in butter and a dap of bacon grease. The secret is to put them in by them self no butter or anything first turn the burner up hot and let all the water come out when the pan has a lot of water in it drain it off and add butter and seasons and cook till they start the pop.

I went for a hour after work this evening and found 30. The weather really held them off til late this year so I'm hoping they'll last a bit longer than normal. I'm going to sautee a few in a minute using your method Matt and I'll let you know how I like them. Appreciate the tip

Ya let me know how you like them if you don't try stuffing them with sausage and stove top stuffing then roll in flower and fry.

I found 10 this evening and we had a fish fry at my parents house, mom stuffed the mushrooms with jalapeno, cream cheese and crumbled bacon. Then floured and deep fried. They were good.

Sauteed are great they are my favorite, but it takes so many to make a good meal when sauteed. What trees did you find them under?

I found about about 30 under some apples trees in an old grew up orchard and found the others under sycamore trees next to the creeks. We really don't have any elm trees, but we find some under popular trees too

I hear popular are good for the black morels. How old do you figure the Apple trees are? I hear the old one are the ones that really put off the mushrooms.

The orchard I look in has been abandoned and overgrown for 50 years, I seem to do better around the old dead ones than the live ones. I find a lot of black ones in old gravel roads, seems they are something in the gravel that really makes them grow. Some locals just ride the old gravel back roads and find them on the edge. I enjoy getting out in the woods and hunting them though. I have been doing really good under the sycamore trees on the river banks, and its the first year I've ever looked in places like that. Is your season about over Matt?

I forgot to say that I did go to a orchard that was working until a few years ago and now the guy has horses pastures in it yesterday and found some but not very many. Seems the old trees are definitely better. Have a few spots where they are just 2 or 3 apple trees back in the woods and some years I might find 70 under one tree. Found a few growing out of old rotten apple logs yesterday too

We have had some warm weather here so it's pretty close to over. That's a really nice pic of the morel and log and nice finds.

I found about a dozen while turkey hunting in Missouri last week. I don't really know what or where to look for them but found these just outside a field under a dead tree.
Mighty fine eating!

Jealous of all your finds...here in northeast PA we are just now getting warm nights...have a big rain tomorrow...maybe they will start popping up...still no lilac blooms if you go of that motto
