I had tanned a few in the past, but have put 8 whole rats in the freezer to probably get rid of. I was surprised to hear that it would take 6-8 to have some mittens made. If I thaw and skin these, would the pelts end up good enough for a project like this? Otherwise I'll just start skinning as I get them again.

I would get them out and put them up as soon as possible. Whole rats left to long In the freezer will end up becoming freezer burned and will be useless.
Once those hides are put up you can place them back In the freezer and you will be good to go.

Are rats (in the round) more prone to freezer burn than other furbearers? Just curious. Thanks.

How quick might such rats become freezerburned? Maybe it depends on the way in which they are stored in the freezer.

It's all about the nose area. There Is NO meat or fat In that area and that will be the first area to dry out same as freezer burn.
The other thing Is thawed rats are a real pain to skin. They just want to fall apart after they are thawed.

Ahh, maybe that's why Groenewold will only buy round carcass rats within 150 miles of their shop.
