I like using plastic buckets for tainting. Glass can break if the lid is on too tight. Some folks put the end of a tube through the lid and the other end weighted down in a container of water. You might want to calk where the tube goes into the lid if you don't have an airtight seal. This allows the gas to vent into the water while giving no place for flies to gain access to the meat. Some like to put one of those aquarium aerators on the end of the tube.

I simply put the lid on the plastic bucket and place a weight on the lid. As the gas builds up, it escapes around the seal and the weight on top of the lid puts enough pressure on it to keep any gaps from forming that will let flies in. Sometimes I will find fly eggs around the bucket lid, so I wipe them off good before opening the bucket.

TheBig1 you mention you have "I also have beef liver, beef tongue, beef heart, steelhead carcass, and steelhead eggs." I've not liked baits made with Beef Tonque or Beef heart. Now the liver, steelhead carcass and steelhead eggs would be some good stuff all ground up together. Definitely keep the flies out or it is garbage.

Mine go in my "stinky shed" where no dogs can get to my concoctions, and I have climate control.

I sure am different from a lot of these folks. I assume you want something inexpensive ALONG with simple from a modern standpoint. Here are 2 of mine: 1.) Go to the grocery store and purchase 2 lbs. of chicken livers (on sale if you can) or gizzards will work, but I have more luck with the livers, as both are cut to about the right size for the "hole" trappers. Use fresh or taint to your liking. 2.) Go to your own freezer and get some game you forgot about and is freezer burned. Cut into your bait size pieces. Buy some cheap milk and soak the game (rabbit, squirrel, deer etc. etc.) in the milk for 24 hours in the fridge (tell the wife you are trying to save it from being wasted). Re-bag and freeze/store until trapping season. If you taint this it will go fast with the milk base so you decide what you want. I use them fresh in the fall, as it saves a step. Does not have the "Mystery or Mystique" of the above recipes but a lot more simple and it works for me. My take. --the mike

I've had great luck on coyotes with chopped beaver and Dobbins' Bait Solution. Nothing else added but you sure can. Another simple one is Jack Mackerel. Go here and enter Jack Mackerel in the Trapperman search box for a bunch of reading.

The recipe from Hershberger's book is 2 cans of Jack Mackerel, 1/4 ounce tincture of asafoetida (get that from Paul here) and enough honey to make a paste. Mash up the mackerel, stir it all together and it's done.

You can also drill a 1/4" hole and tape 3 or 4 layers of scrap flannel shirt over it, as taught in Nick Wyshinski's book.

Personally, I use lil aquarium air stones, and keep critters away from it.

It seems as though this bait making deal isn't as hard as I/someone might think that it is. It seems as though once you do it once you learn that in reality it is pretty easy.

Now I'm not taking anything away from the professional bait makers, their skills and time spent testing speak for themselves.

All that I'm saying is that for someone who's never done it, we might be over thinking it due to having never done it as well as our complete misunderstanding of what the term "Bait" truly means. We might be thinking that we have to make something as complex as the professionals when in reality that's not the case at all.

The majority of the live market trappers down here just use chicken leg quarters. Some of them are catching 100+ a year

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

Somethings work and somethings work better. My understanding is in high population areas where theres high competition for food its harder to see the difference between better stuff and the average stuff. A Person has to try stuff and test stuff to find out what works best for them. There's a lot of studies done by the government to try and find out what works and what works better when it comes to coyotes if a person wants to look into it.

It depends.
Follow the directions of the maker of your solution, easy peasy.
Pauls and Jamesons is 1 pt / gal meat but Blackies and Clints are different, I think.
Pauls already has SB in it to stop the taint/preserve and other don't.
That's the beauty of using a commercial solution...the recipes are already figured out...and the maker will tell you how to use their solution.

If you don't have a gallon of meat, no problem, just reduce the ratio's accordingly.

I think, in another thread, you said you bought Reuswatts (sp) so I'd ask him, if it didn't come with instructions.

ive since then started using 5 gallon oil buckets. They have a rubber o ring in the lids! Prevents flys from getting in and lets gass out. Fly eggs will develop around the seam I just wipe it down with bleach kills eggs, and slows flys down
