I can not bait/lure/float set a rat
This is going to cost me on my new property if I can't catch them this way
Can someone tell me how you MAKE a rat go to a trap set
Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!
If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

So your saying It's not legal or you don't know how to catch them that way.
Here In WI you would be hard pressed to take a rat on any kind of a float. It might work In the spring but we don't have a true spring season. Do you have a spring season?
Toilets? I have a 3 acre marsh I have trapped for 20 years and you would be rat less If you set toilets. There just aren't any. I always found that toilets were more of a spring thing then a fall thing.
Bottom structure will limit you In finding rat runs.
What kind of banks do you have on this lake? Are there rat huts on this body of water?

I set toilets in the fall all the time. A toilet can be any spot where there is a pile of rat turds. All kinds of them here.

I will argue the lure thing till I set my last rat trap.
If you can't find a toilet or toilets and your banks won't let you make pockets. And the bottom Is of a consistency where you can't see runs or It's to deep right off the bank to work them what you going to do? Your going to have to make some type of lured set to get them to where you can set your traps.
A good rat lure will draw rats no matter what the non lure rat trappers will tell you.
Lets say that Les finds and sets one trap at each toilet. How many rats will he catch?
The beav finds a toilet and sets It. Then he makes a lured set on each side of that toilet. How many rats Is the beav going to catch? These toilets aren't one rat specific. Multiple rats use these toilets so you might as well catch as many rats as you can with a minimum of checks.
Lure Is fast and cheap. Get some of those viles they use In the cut flower stores. They have a cap on them so you can place a bit of cotton In them and soak that cotton with your lure. Snap on the cap and carry 20 or 30 In your pocket It's a no brainer.
The thing we don't know Is what Is Michigan trappin's situation. All of us rat trappers have come up with a plan and a method on how to trap our areas. Now Michigan trappin Is going to have to do the same.

Tooth past washes away at the first rain. But It does work.
Peppermint oil mixed with lard works no matter what.
Lennon's rat lure Or the Bosses rat lure work good. And pure rat glands are over the top. Or gather rat poop and make your own toilets where you want them.

i've also had good luck around ponds using the bottom edge set as i think they hug the bank to protect from above.

i've also had good luck around ponds using the bottom edge set as i think they hug the bank to protect from above. Top edge sets are killer too, as well as a gob of mud on the bank setup like a castor mound for beaver. Toss a couple orange peels on for good measure.

I'll take. A picture tomorrow and post it. I've trapped creeks swamps and small ponds with blind sets and do well for the number of traps I set. But this is new for me.

Shave the bank to make a vertical structure then us a BG tight against that. Some ponds are more of a challenge than others..

MT - I am not far from ya so I assume we trap a lot of the same types of rat areas - Beav's methods are pretty spot on, I even agree with the use of lure ... Baited sets IMO need to be set near cover as close as possible, thats a key factor in increasing catch % with baited sets for rats... would love to talk with you again if your going to be in Evart or Escanaba...

Cover Like HAGz said Is the common denominator when It comes to shore line sets.
