We live in a very small town in East Tennessee, a Post Office, bank, cafe & a flashing red light. The bank has shut off pretty much all amenities, no loan services, no safe deposit boxes, just basic banking services left now. Last week we stopped by and I asked how much longer we were going to have the bank before they shut this branch down. The teller told me the FDIC would not let them close this branch! Huh? Why? Cause the community has to be served by a bank was the answer. So (heavy with sarcasm) if we didn't have a bank they would make someone put one here? Nope, but since we're here, we can't leave.... What a crock of crap! A business that has a money loosing location can't close that location cause it just happens to be a bank and it might inconvenience some folks? Did someone outlaw free enterprise while I wasn't looking?

FDIC is backed by the best printing presses that $ can buy.....and a big stockpile of ink and paper.

Our town lost our only bank last year....

I am not sure what the rules are but I am guessing there is more to the story higher up.
