The guy's in my Beagle Club use 1/10 CC per 10 lbs Dog weight, as worked out by a Veterinarian, and published in Hounds & Hunting. I put on top of their kibble when feeding.

injectable ivomec is what many guys with a few dogs use - use it orally not injected - $30 will last years for 10 dogs - ivermectin paste wormer for horses as well can be used
vet who field trialed bird dogs is the first one who told me this You can inject if you want to, I have known a couple of hound hunters that injected 1cc and did it for years, both told me they thought it was more effective injected at keeping ticks and fleas off. (using the sheep drench) Kills any biting parasites and most intestinal worms at the same time. Cures mange in a very few days. Last I checked it wasn't labeled for canine use either way, so the fault if anything goes wrong is on you/us. The bit about killing collies is true, it bleeds through the brain membrane in those dog breeds.

Charles, I have heard and also goggled about ivermectin use in humans. They use it for lice and parasite control in many poor countries. I have used it in all my dogs (no collies) I have owned since I was raising hogs back in the late 70s.... maybe 80s. Pretty cheap. But I was told that if you give a full dose of ivermectin to a dog infected already with heart worm there is a good chance you can have a bad result in doing so because it will kill all the worms at once. I usually give a dose every spring and fall to my dog. Never had a problem. I use fly tags for cattle too for fly control on my dogs over the years. Connect them to my dogs collar with plastic zip ties. Hang one on their dog house and never have flies bother the dogs too bad. Sure works on the ticks too.

ShaneT's link is some good info and NebCatMan's comment caused me think, no one I know was actually targeting heart worms; rather they use it as a general wormer and anti parasitic, with emphasis on tick control and ear mite prevention. The dosages used in one instance are more than in the other. This from the site Shane linked; Dosages as high as 50 times the amount used to prevent heartworms are used to treat mites on dogs (demodectic mange). Very high dosages may also be problematic for dogs infected with Heartworms, and those being treated with Comfortis. The other thing is % concentration that you can buy varies a good bit.
