Would someone care to share the steps to take my already rank horse hoof paring to the point of a decent acctractor for me? I sure get a great whiff from them and I'll bet they'd be top notch with some of the pocket gopher chunks I have. Thanks

I quit fooling with them. bulletbox some years back told about putting hoof trimmings in a jar, filling it with water, putting a lid on it and letting it age a few months in hot weather. water stinks something awful. coyotes like it.

The foul water is used as an LDC lure and works very well in drawing the coyotes into set location where your other lures or baits are used to draw them to the set. I have used the horse hoof lure as a post or rub lure and caught coyote and fox. I make the set just about the same as a urine post set but put the lure a little higher because the animals are wanting to rub their necks on the post. If you put it on the ground or a low backing they will try to roll on it. I also use a couple traps in case they come from a different direction other the downwind side.

Mixing the clippings with water did NOT produce the smell I was looking for ! I will use a rasp to produce a coarse powder the next time I try horse hoof clippings!

Golf Ball: If you have to use a rasp, you're using the wrong stuff already. You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

What you want is the soft, almost spongy "frog" material from the inner portion of the hoof. The hard stuff is just like a fingernail . . . it isn't going to get you very far.

Get the froggy material, then either soak it in water or good quality coyote urine. Then grind it really fine. Either use the ground material, or pour off the liquid and add that to your lure (or use as a squirtable material).

Or in a hole, or catch the coyote before he can roll on it, or put some fist-sized rocks around it to discourage him from rolling, etc.

Hahaha. Not stupid. A jell might be a good idea. If you get it on your hands, you have to have your hands surgically removed.

Add some good mink musk to it, or some sac oil. Let those foul trimmings be the carrier for more appealing odors.

I used It once. Then I got smart and never used it again. There are better options out there.
Don't get It on you or In your truck.
I think the horse hoof smell would just over power anything you tried to add to It.

A trapper gave me a pint full one time. It was so bad of a smell, I would not use it even if it could call in a dozen coyote at once, no coyote worth having to deal with that smell. The Beav is right adding other quality ingredients to it would only ruin the good stuff. Who knows maybe I smelled a bad batch, but I'll stick with mixing skunk musk, beaver castor and mink glands which smell good.

It is a horrible smelling liquid for sure! My next batch im going to render it with a lite oil. Paraffin oil and hoofs sitting in the sun for a whole year! Then im going 50/50 with bto to see which is most promimnent! I may even try the three top power house scents in a treo ,in a small batch of course say a pint! I bet the skunk looses! HFT is'nt one of my more favorable scents but it has potential. Cheap and simple to mass produce! I will never consider it a go to scent but a killer change up, that everyone else is to squeamish to use!

Laz I don’t remember the dogs fighting over the frog , just the wall clippings . But from what I remember it all smells the same to my nose. Now I’m gonna have to go down and trim the neighbors horse just to compare. Lol !
