Hey guys. First time posting, just got vetted for membership, but I’ve been following for a few weeks now. I live in Southwest Ga and have hardly any trapping experience except doing a little trapping as a teenager. To be honest, trapping hasn’t crossed my mind in the last 35 years..
I have access to an unnamed private plantation where I hunt, fish occasionally, and help out when needed. Nothing major on the helping, feeding dogs, helping with burns, helping a little on the hunts, etc. I was recently approached my thr plantation manager telling me I need another hobby...trapping. Apparently the trapper he had been using had gotten a little too big for the smaller plantation. (2700ac) I was very honest and explained I had no equipment or even trapped since I was about 15. He said no problem, they’d buy whatever I need and the best way to learn is to do it.
Well, I’m a prideful person and bought all my own equipment after reading this site and watching umpteen hundred videos. I told him once I get back into the swing of things they could purchase whatever else I might need. Unfortunately in Georgia the only thing open to trap is the ole coyote. Think we had only ever caught one back in my early years, with Fox, coons, and the occasional bobcat making up the most of our catches.
So I get my supplies in and get my traps ready and make my sets. The only thing I knew really was the dirt hole so that what I did. For almost a week and a half...nothing. I would get on here every day and night reading posts about coyotes. Even went to the archives reading everything I could find. And as most know, there is NO one way is the only way. I’m the type that takes everything in and applies it as the need or situation arises.
I soon figured out that baits only attract ants. Lures do just about the same. So then I got reading about Urine and ordered that. That didn’t work either, although I was seeing tracks in my set, just not on my pan! And I guess you can tell if I was seeing that then I was checking them way too often and way to close.
So I left them alone for 3 days just doing a drive by and making sure nothing had been tripped. And Saturday morning I made my first coyote catch in probably 35 years!! To say I was ecstatic was an understatement!! And it came on a set I was planning on moving, lol!
I’m a sponge right now for info. I did notice this particular set was in the wide open near a hill so to speak and most of my other are nestled up against brush with limited visibility. And my sets are all along roads where there are tracks, scat, or the manager has pics of them walking.
Anyways, just wanted to say thanks to everyone that’s contributed to my first catch!! I realize what works for some my not work for all, but you never know what may work for you until you try it!

Congrats on the catch. It's a tough time of year to be getting started on coyotes. This fall things should start clicking a little better for you.

Welcome. Coyotes can be a pain and an addiction! I've never tried to catch them this time of year, so I'm no help.

Congrats, you learned 2 important lessens with your first coyote. Stay away from your sets and patience. This time of year is tough!

Insects will make your task a bit harder at this time of year id go for a oil that saturates into the dirt. bacon grease ,fryer oil and welcome to the addiction and congrats

Doug is correct. Gonna get tough to be catching them with the heat but not impossible.

I've received a tremendous amount of advice on this page. Some better than others but the above advise has been by far the best and most practical.

Yes sir...read all 13 pages here and everything in the archives on coyotes. Still looking and waiting for more info, lol. The only way I’ve caught anything is due to this site. Everyone has a technique...it’s just finding what works for me. So far it’s dirthole sets left alone for weeks. Recently placed some flat sets or post sets I guess they’d be called.

Both males. Appear young or maybe it’s just because they are shedding real bad right now. So what does that mean by catching young males? Are they looking for an area or could these just be our size coyotes and this is their home?

Probably adult males in there territory, or you may be on a border and got the males. If so your on a good location, and most likely dens close by. They'll be more.

Man I hope so! This is as addictive as turkey hunting! Something about fooling cagey critters makes me lose sleep at night. If this rain would quit for a day or so that would be nice too. Calling for 4-8” over the weekend. Hard to find sign when it gets washed out every few hours. Unfortunately this is my only release...I know of no one else that traps.

Ya but it's a healthy addiction , As has been said by others it's a tough time of year to be consistent but anytime is a good time to learn.

congrats on your coyote. Every body says they can be tuff and they are right. Patients in probably the best advise. You might catch one the 1st night or it might take weeks at certain locations. Stay at it and keep notes, bait, set type, lure type, etc. It might take a few years but you might find a pattern that works better in that location. Good luck in the future.

You said"I know of no one else that traps". I looked the following info up for you to follow up on and would recommend that you do so. It might open some doors for you including finding some new friends with like interests nearby.
