So there has been some threads about the sales but how about your overall view of your sales
So are the prices? up, down, good , weak or what overall ?
All my pelts go to tanneries for the last few years
Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!
If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

Happy with the recent beaver sale at FHA.Nice to see good beaver prices on the rise. Not yet where they should be but going in the right direction hopefully.Remains to be seen if this was a one off or a trend.

The best I ever did on these crappy coyotes from WI. And I'm not including the $99.00 coyotes from the DNR study.
$67.00 and $70.00 coyotes from around here. Sure I had some $11.00 and $4.00 coyotes.
But with a 100% clearance and a over all average of $37.00 I'm very happy.
Still have a few rats to sell but It Isn't a big deal. And My few coon sold at a $13.00 average.

I won't skin another fox. They will go the way of grinners and coons.
Muskrats will get skinned and put up because they don't cook well with the hair on and they are easy to put up.

The few beaver we had (16) were sold at a nose count of $15.00. With NO added fees. They didn't see any auction or for that matter any fur buyer.

This fur market sucks. Even coyotes unless a trapper has western heavies or possibly some super nice heavy easterns. The recent FHA was bad except for the cat sale. Nafa did a little better on the coon and rats and wild mink, but only sold about half or less. Beaver weren’t good either.
This fur market really does suck.

Yes, what was supposed to sell well did, the other stuff I didn't expect much and that's what I got. I was happy with the clearance as we've has some cats carrying over the last 3 sales. Wish I would have kept a couple pieces for tanning. Had a cat that was bright orange on top and pure white on the bottom, not a spot on it, would have been a cool pelt to keep. Also sent the biggest red fox I've ever caught, should have kept it also as it didn't sell.

I feel for you Hobbie..reds were as bad as Ive seen in the last 5 years for the section. And by a pretty fair margin... 6.93 Average for first section ...lol. I reckon we gotta go back quite a few years to see that poor.

I had a coyote sell for more money than I ever got for a single pelt in my life .Red Fox ,Raccoon and mink I did not do so good But I did not expect much difference .There where no predictions that the fur market was going to be great this past season. I tried to trap accordingly and tried to do some things differently just to see if they worked ..I had as much fun as I could ever expect and can't wait until this fall to do it again .I figure I only have so many seasons in me .And the number grows smaller each year whether I trap or not .Most pessimists are likely not very successful trappers .The real answer is no I am not happy I always think it should be better. But no body is making me do it but me

I haven't been happy with a fur sale since rats were over ten bucks. But for some reason I keep on trapping. Guess I had several hundred dollars worth of fun this year, but never sold a fur.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

From what you posted the FHA sale sucked. And not much different then NAFA.

The fur market is close to being done. A tiny few can pencil out a profit on fur only trapping. Looking at the cost of living and the value of a dollar prices have never been worse and it ain’t close. Still love doing it but the reality sucks

For me,Mink were much better at the Nafa march sale than at FHA.Well I really cant say because FHA still has 80% of them after 2 sales now.Nafa cleared them all. I don't mind them holding on to fur instead of give it away, if the buyers for a particular item are not at the auction.

I shipped few pelts this year. Not to give away any secrets, but most everything went to the taxidermy trade this year. Sure, takes a lot of time to prep, but the returns were certainly well worth the extra time. Wife and I averaged $60 on red foxes, unbelievable $60 on striped skunk, and $45 on Idaho marten. Beaver, muskrats, coyotes, coon went to FHA, but no complaints. Personally, I'll trap every year 'til I tip over...

I was pretty happy. My coyotes averaged $60 on the nose. I sold around 30 of them and a few fox which went for around $30. My badgers are getting sent off to Moyles.

"The market" wanted my fur cheap. "The market" is going to do without this year. We will see if "the Market" rethinks their wants and desire next year or over the Summer. I applaud both Auctions for holding the line somewhere. (At least on my stuff)

Looks to me like if you had western beaver, you would have been better off with all of them in section III at FHA. Section I Western beaver only averaged 8 something and the section III averaged over 9. Talk about screwed up. Don, I think that may be because here in the West most of our beaver are currently taken in October and early November. They have thick leather (much more so than eastern's) and almost no underwool. The Canadian auctions only make two sections for beaver nowdays, so a significant portion of paler southern pelts go into the westerns. This would seem to me to be pretty unatractive to the hatter market that wants the wool for felt making, again IMO.

How anyone can look at beaver prices at the two auctions and say there has been any uptick in prices must be smoking something. Don Wolfe you’re right. What fur market. Western coyote and cats after those game over

I can only say what I get for my fur here.My avg for the beaver I sent to the recent sale at FHA was Just under $30 cdn.Add 10 for castor that is close to a 40 dollar avg for each beaver. I kept smaller sizes and damaged to tan, this works for me.I make more on the tanned fur than the raw,but of course it is value added product with time invested. When the price of raw fur climbs again my tanned fur inventory will be stocked hopefully until the next downturn. If you want to take advantage of the international auction, listen to what they tell you about what type of pelts their buyers are willing to pay for,And just ship that.If you ship stuff that they cannot sell you will be disappointed. There are always other markets for the pelts that the auction buyers are not interested in. So you can target what is in demand, like coyote, marten, cats, etc, depending on where you trap. You can trap later to target prime pelts, and you can cull out poor\dmg\small fur and either toss it,find another market(like sell in the round\hatter etc),or self tan for own use,put together a fur kit for educational purposes, etc. I can honestly say I have never lost money trapping.

You know Boco both Auctions said the fur I sent them was in demand at good prices; before I trapped it. Both Auctions were wrong; or we got the all too familiar buyer collusion to fix prices going on again?

Price fixing? I don't think so or everything would have sold.
I think they have an abundance to pick from and don't need much for any of it.
I was being hopeful and sent some in, I was wrong. I should have thrown them all away and been done with it.

When beaver crashed in the 1800's the trappers went to scouting (baby-sitting)for the army and guiding wagon trains.
Lot of work in these urban areas relocating and excluding squirrels, excluding bats, catching the evil black snake sunning on the patio etc.
A lot of those old trappers didn't want to babysit dumb soldiers and immigrants so they just lived best they could with indian wives off in some remote place.
I don't want to listen to some soccer mom fret about the coon litter I just got out of her attic no matter how lucrative it is. Luckily I can make my money other ways and trap for me. I managed to break even this year which is lots better than losing money. Think I could have made a little if I hadn't been so sick.

Price fixing? I don't think so or everything would have sold.
I think they have an abundance to pick from and don't need much for any of it.
I was being hopeful and sent some in, I was wrong. I should have thrown them all away and been done with it. I'm sorry, but this makes no sense to me. Why do you think NAFA tried sealed bids in March? True, buyers who would smuggle fur into their country to avoid taxes, would never stoop so low as to collude to fix prices at an Auction.

Seems like i remember the US government issuing some warrants over fur buyers price fixing
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
