I have a Honda 3 in 1 push mower not a self propelled one. For a couple of year I have been just mulching and has really worked great. This year I have noticed that it is leaving a ribbon of clippings that it isn't mulching or breaking down. It has the twin blade system with both cutting edges.
I sharpened the blades this spring and have triple checked that I have the blades on the right way etc.. The grass is very lush this year and that could be the difference.
Does anyone have a suggestion what is wrong if any?

Cut a bit higher if the grass is thick or bag it.
Sometimes I have to double cut areas. That's because the grass is thick and I want to cut it lower...if I raise the cut height I do not have any issues.
Supposed to cut 1/3 the total length of grass. 6" to 4" for example.
Most folks cut to short anyway..here in Kansas I like it 4" for the hot times. 3-3.5" for spring/fall and maybe 2.5 for last mow.

Marty was hoping you would chime in. That is good advise and that could be my problem is to short of cut. I bet I didn't raise it back up a notch from my first cut after I thatched my lawn. I will go set it up one notch right now. Thanks
I just measured from cement floor to the blades cutting edge was about 2 1/2 inches. If I raise the deck the next notch it brings it to 3 or a tad more inches. That is where I will try it the next cutting.

Mower deck should be 3-4" off the ground, most people scalp the crap out of their grass, it can't grow good roots if it is trying to regrow blades, grass needs blades for catching dew. Mine is at 3.25" at highest setting

Thanks

I would put up a hot wire and let sheep eat the grass into the dirt but then I would need goats to eat the weeds. I don't like goats. Sheep meat is lots better. If grass was supposed to be short it would have evolved that way. where are the snakes and rodents supposed to hide?

LOL >>> since I have a lawn, live in town I have a responsibility to keep it up. I can't agree with you anymore about saving gas and expense of just keeping grass weed free etc.. We don't spend much time on the lawn but we do keep it up.
I have a neighbor that is one of those that if thee is one leave, one weed, one ant crawling on his grass he is set for battle. The guy drives me absolutely crazy with his trying to be the best and perfection. He waters his lawn everyday and for a long time. I give him his dues but I'm not doing no contests and trying to have the perfect lawn. He stubs his nose at me all the time. LOL
One day he was on his hands and knees picking something in a bed of rocks. I asked him if he was picking strawberries. He gave me a dirt look and said he was picking some leaves from the rocks. LOL

Even the best mowers are only made to cut third of the grass height, even less when mulching especially when dealing with thick grass. Blue grass I mow at 2.5 early and 3 as it gets warmer, 3.5 for the very best thickest blue grass. Fescue 3-5-4” . Right now if the yard is healthy, getting water and fertilizer it might be growing an inch a day so you will ideally need to mow every other day.
Does your mower have a side discharge? I side shoot almost every thing and double mow it right now because they are all so tall.
I mowed 147 yards this week, got a little experience. Lol

WOW! 147 lawns in a week that is amazing.
No this Honda has a rear discharge and three different setting bag/clip/mulch. I'm not enough sure what clip means because with a rear discharge all clippings would come right back to you??
I bagged for years and years and the last three years I stopped bagging and started mulching but bag occasionally. My lawn seems to be in the best shape since not bagging. I do clean every spring very well and that is it.

At least grass grows there, lol some places out west I bet it doesn't do well. I lower deck setting a little in the fall to help pick up more of the leaves, I mix grass and leaves into my compost pile for the garden

^ you are right not all places out west have good ground and poor at best in most cases. I actually live in a valley with average soil but if not watered or irrigated you couldn't raise a thing. A year with normal rain fall things stay alive and grow. A dry year not good.
