A DOD study has shown that 75% of kids that try to enlist these days, are rejected for Legal issues, Drugs and Obesity.
Every kid needs a Dog and a Curmudgeon.

Things aren't that different, when I walked into the Marine Corps recruiting office in 1984, the recruiter told me for every 100 people that walked into a recruiters office and said "I want to join, let's start the process", only 13 graduated boot camp.
But Finn is right, they relax the enlistment criteria when they need bodies.

Meanwhile someone still pays to have a draft board and they still want 18 year olds to register. Hasn't been a draft since What 1970? I guess the draft board people need to make a living too....................

50 in my original flight started boot camp. about half finished on time. we had quite a few that had been set back from other flights that started before us at the end. I've no clue how many of the original 50 didn't finish or how many were rejected to leave that 50. i know none of it was easy. you had to want to in order to do.

Out of my platoon In Boot camp we only had One recruit set back. We had 2 Individuals that were there because the Judge said jail time or military time.

During Vietnam, everybody passed boot camp. In the next “police action”, you’ll see that happening again.

But a perfect example of the other half was my ex. She said she wanted in but after her mepps visit they said she couldn't because of some scars that looked like self harm. They said they would have reconsidered if she took a mental eval but she refused. Instead she ran around talking about how the army didn't want her.
So my opinion is that if you really want in most of the time there is a way, ut a large majority just want to be able to say they "tried"
I might fall into that category some what. I enrolled in DEPS and went through MEPS, got a rating and gained the 20 necessary pounds and had a leave date. Maybe 3 weeks before my leave date I get contacted by someone from Minnesota location saying that I was being denied because of some paperwork. I contacted my recruiter who made it seem there was no other option. A few months later I get contacted by the recruiter's Petty Officer who explained the whole thing and asked if I wanted to try again. Had a pretty sour taste in my mouth from the whole thing. I didn't hold anything against the Navy though....just a chip on my shoulder from that drunk of a recruiter.
