I'm not looking at what brands to use, but what to use.I am targeting coyotes. I know to use a food lure and bait at dirt holes. What do you use at flat sets? What are curiosity lures good at? Gland lures and urine are good at scent posts but what else are they used for I have read that gland lures at certain times of the year can scare off pups.

Some of the stronger scents will scare off the animal. I live in eastern New Mexico and we normally have a breeze to a strong wind so do I need to use a stronger scent? At the beginning of the season the day time temp's are in the 50's and 60's during the night the temp drop's about 20 degrees and it gets colder as it goes on into December.

This is my third year of trapping and each year I have doubled the number of coyotes I am catching but I think I can do better if I understand what lure/bait/gland or urine to use and when. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Good question!!! I too need to understand such things.

You can't cheat the mountain pilgrim. Mountain's got its own ways.

imo, all lures and all processed baits are curiosity lures. but, the old adage of "curiosity killed" is true as can be. Treated as curiosity lures they become some what interchangeable, with the exception of substances that elicit a rolling or rubbing response.
Fresh or spoiled raw meat or fish or even fruit are really the only true food baits. My choice of bait would be a whole large animal, cow-horse-burro-moose size dead critters.

There are some good past threads that show others' opinions and if I can I'll look for some later.

The only thing I can tell you is I mix and match quite a few different combinations of lure and baits. The only constant I do is I always make at least 2 sets at every location, for 2 reasons 1 if a non target gets there first and 2 when trapping coyotes if it's good enough for 1 set it's good enough for 2 or 3 and who doesn't want a double or triple.the next thing is I always use coyote urine at 1 and fox urine at the other set.

When it comes to what lure and bait to use it's a crap shoot, most lures and baits on the market today are well made and work but to know what combinations work the best will probably never be known (to many variables) weather, time of year or maybe that day they're not interested in what you're using but a few days later they might. They are animals and we will never really understand why they do what they do.

But I will say if you're doubling your catch every year you're doing something right and you're on the right track. good luck.

Thank you tim and Huntall76 my first year was 17 and last year was 36. It's been working out good with the number of catches as far as learning how to skin and flesh I'm able to keep up with the work load.

The thread TJM shared explains this all quite well.. Your population dictates alot of what works and what doesn't.. time of year plays too.

Common sense catches alot of fur..
