Yes I add a few drops of vanilla extract to mine but put the whole works in a cheap container and suspend it....the ants love it.

I add cherry or grape Jello powder....just enough to smell.

Or just use Blackies Fur King......my wife likes the smell so much, she "wants" to put some on toast...lol.

Dried banana chips work great in summer and fall.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I don't use a banana bait for raccoons, but for summertime trapping raccoons aren't picky. Sweet paste will get their attention, virtually any combination of fruit or fruit oils. I wouldn't overthink making a raccoon bait especially for ADC raccoons. Best part of trapping summertime raccoons, is that you already know they are there.

My Banana bait is only Banana. Banana works year round and is my second best selling bait I have for both ADC work and Fur trapping. I sold a lot of Banana bait at the PA convention to fur boys, and DP trappers buy it like it is going out of style. My wife caught 14 groundhogs in the 4 days I was gone at the pa convention and used banana bait. Banana will catch all year Coon, Grey fox, skunk, squirrels Ground hogs as long as they are moving, I have caught muskrats and even beaver using banana baits. and deer like them I have been using banana baits in fur and ADC for close to 30 years now.

Our Peaches and Cream bait is like that Jonesie. Every furbearer eats peaches if they find them. It is attractive to just about everything.

Bananas and banana oil is one of those universal odors that gets a lot of attention from all wildlife.

Jonesie. Do you have and feral feline issues with banana based baits? Is that why the DP guys like them? I don't use cages very often and can relese them there, but DP's change things.

IME cats don't go to sweets, and I often used Blackies Fur King or the recipe I post above to avoid cats but get furbearers.

Thanks John. that is the info I was looking for. Too many cats around some areas to risk the normal DP bait of cat food with fish oil!

No cats do not seem to get caught in DP's with banana or sweet base baits or lures. I guess there could be some exceptions, because I have caught feral cats in cages using banana and other sweet baits. I do not think it was the bait that got them in the cage, but maybe curiosity and also I think they may be attracted to the rodent smells that the mice and chipmunks leave in the cages as they steal the sweet and banana baits or go for those lures.

Will add...at times a cage that has caught another animal perhaps a rabbit, squirrel, groundhog etc. and is NOT CLEANED PROPERLY is the attractant for feral cats.

We all know it isn't hard to make a bait and lure that will take animals...agreed? JMO, the most overlooked element is the reasoning for the animal to hit that bait. I know a lot of people who make their baits and go off of their own sense of smell, but still buy commercial bait and lure. JMO that is a negative, and don't make sense. That step where you're using your sense of smell comes after you have made the odor the animals have told you they "like" or are attracted to by testing ingredients in the field that is attracting them by physical signs. Then try to duplicate the odor and even then there may be slight variations in odor, due to where you got the ingredients on the first run. Just because it smells good to you or someone else is having great success doesn't necessarily mean its going to hammer home catches for you. I carry multiple bait and lure on my adc line due to the fact they are geared for the time of year that I find work best. Some work great in the heat and don't attract ants and flies, cold weather etc.

Knowing why you're adding something to a bait or lure will benefit you more than just tossing some oils into a base, and it will also save you money because you DO NOT need to lace up bait and lure with a ton of oils to have an effective attractant, all that verbal judo is BS. Sounds and looks good on a forum page but not necessary. On the flip side, if you do throw something together and its a hit out in the field, take the time to find out the (what and why) factor for that attraction. When positive sets run dry, you will find that diets will play a big role and put more money/fur into your traps on the summer line. That is how you find a "good summer bait".

OUTSTANDING! Just a tip, take it or leave it. When it comes to coon bait I find a nice sticky smear able paste that you can smear in or on an object in the trap if needed is hard to beat. The coons will lick the cage clean if its a good bait.
