Nice bear Sask! I'm like you in all my travels hunting ,trapping, fishing ,quadding and everything else It is rare to see a bear once a year.

BBarnes I'll quote you

Somebody wrote

"I wouldn't hunt the squirrel Dog, just hunt the squirrels with a dog"

Your response

This made me laugh

"Seems like there's one that pops up in every thread! I was just trying to find out information "

So your ok with hunting animals with a dog but not baiting? There are all kinds of methods people use for hunting, any thing that has been deemed legal I'm not sure why it should not be used.

Please read the second line you posted and explain to everyone what that means.

Beauty Sask..... good on you.
I was immediately thinking what Boco then others typed, looks like a great hide. I too wish we had a spring season.

I wish we could bait here, you literally can get as many trail cam pics of bear as u do deer but if it wasn't for using dogs we'd be lucky to kill a few

[quote=Sask hunter]After a gong show spring due to quad breakdown and only being able to kinda run my baits when I had family around I ended it on a good note tonight. Quad got fixed Monday and I hunted Monday night at a different bait and only saw a small blonde.

Tonight walking into this bait I kicked off a small black and around 6 had a small blonde come in. 730 the wind died right down and not 15 minutes now later another small black cane running in but you could hear another bear off to the left of the bait. After 5 minutes or so the small one ran off and this guy came marching in! I knew he was a shooter instantly so I focused on calming myself and letting him come into the barrel. He got next to the barrel and was slightly quartering to me and I gave him one with the trusty 338 win mag which put him nose first into the dirt and he never moved!!!

Nice Bear for sure.any rubs on the back section so you can make a rug? Now do plan on eating him? when I went last year the guides said no bear meat in spring.eating it in camp or take home.
we hunted over bait in upper Ft McMurray, Alberta. The only way to hunt in the Boreal forest is bait. You cant stalk, its impossible.

That's correct. it was may 9th thru the 15th.
i thought you could eat it ,but as I remember they just started to purge the plug so would it be more toxic since they haven't really been eating and drinking?
any thoughts you Northern guys?

I have hunted bears all over North American both spring and fall. Never heard of a bear you couldn't eat because it was too early in the spring, etc.. Definitely some are better than others, but if you kill a bear on bait, they have been eating for a week at least, they will eat grass or whatever until they can consume bait. The only times I have seen bears that were basically inedible was when they were feeding on winterkill or rotten fish. I've eaten a lot of spring bears and they have all been good.

Shot a bear on April 30 with snow still on the ground and it was good.

Spring bear is great eating, and much easier to process than a fall bear.
