Thanks for sharing that Jack. How about some info on your technique for tranquilizing those guys and the procedures after that point. I'm inclined to just make up some fantastic stuff but I know the truth is even more interesting.

Glad you posted Gulo

Would you feel comfortable saying what size snare cable would you trust for the big cats? I understand if you aren’t. Just curious is all....

I have no experience with it whatsoever, so I probably shouldn’t even say it, but just for fun I would think 1/8” with a 12/0 inline swivel right behind the loop would do it....

Thank you

In early 1993 I took some time off from my job in Alaska to trap tigers for a study of said critters in Far Eastern Russia. Caught some leopards, Himalayan bears, brown bears, and miscellaneous other critters. Was over there for a year right after Glasnost and Perestroika, one of very few westerners in that part of Russia at the time. Stayed a year, then back to Alaska. Returned a couple of times after that to hunt (Russian boar, Roe deer, Sika deer) with a couple of the Russians I worked with that had become fast friends. Was a wonderful year. On the other hand, was happy to get back to interior Alaska.

Absolutely incredible experience. That is just awesome!

Are there many people that trap in Russia? With as much land mass as they have you would think that they would be able to supply a lot of wild fur to the world.

When you were over there did you see any fur buyers or trapping supply dealers?

I believe Russia produces around 300,000 sable/marten a year. The quality of their sables are quite broad, some of sections look just like interior Alaska marten, others such as those found in the Barguzin region are a lot different (incredibly beautiful). But then Russia is a huge place, its no wonder there are differences in the various sections.

Regarding tiger trapping; my Siberian friend says their gauge of a big tiger is when you take off you fur hat and place it over the tiger track, if the track is larger than the hat it's a big tiger. Sound like maybe a #6 Newhouse.

Watch happy people on Netflix? I know it’s on YouTube for sure. One guy was running over a thousand hand made deadfalls for Marten. Awesome documentary showing a year in their life. A tiger? Not many can say they’ve trapped a tiger. That’s awesome.

My guess would be 5/16" minimum. Both for strength and minimal damage to the cat

If I had to guess, and HAD to use a foothold, a #6 Newhouse would be my starting point

I always heard, you had to catch a Tiger by the tail,pcr2. Next thing I might say is,It is absolutely fantastic to be on a trapping site with probably one of the only men in North America to have been fortunate enough to trap a Siberian Tiger. Not to say the least, the same Man getting to trap other Russian animals. Sir it is my Honor to be on this site with you and typing this note to you. Congratulations.

Exactly Don !! It has been my privilege to know jack for over 30 years. He has the most inquisitive mind I have ever known. He has a world of experience. He has way more questions than answers. That's the way it should be IMO.

Gulo, did Bart work with you on the leopard project also or did he stick to the tigers?

White 17...

For tranquilizing, we used a dart gun to deliver the drugs when I first got to Russia. I modified this technique by going to a blow-gun delivery, and the big cats and bears didn't go ballistic when I switched over to the blow-gun. It was a lot easier on them, and thus on me. I still prefer the blow-gun, and use it exclusively on trapped wolves, lions, and bears even now.

Aix...

On the tigers, we used 1/2" cable. 1/8" would have been much too thin. Remember, these things were well over 600 lbs, and very strong.

v2k...

Where I was in Russia and at the time (1993/94), there were very few trappers. Most of the good fur and the trappers were farther north in Siberia. There were 4 different species of marten (Russian sable, yellow-throated marten, stone marten, and beech marten), Eurasian badgers, tree squirrels, raccoon-dogs, American mink, red fox, and, of course, big cats. By law at that time, all fur had to be sold to the government fur buyers, but, despite that, you did see raw and tanned furs for sale in the open markets in the bigger cities.

newhouse114...

Bart replaced me on the tiger work when I started the leopard project. When I returned to Alaska, Bart did go down south and did a short stint on the leopards, but pretty much stayed with the tiger project.

Jeesh, you guys. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. It was an incredible experience, one I'd not care to trade for anything. On the other hand, there are any number of folks that are on this forum that could have done the same thing as well or better than me.

Jack, was the dart gun doing tissue damage or was it the audible that got them riled up ?

Right place at the right time ??? I don't think so. I seem to recall that YOU were requested specifically for the job.

And what about that POW wolf deal a couple years back ?? Seems that might have been a specific request also. A bit too modest there Jackson !

If the answer is "only snares" then my game doesn't work. But it's worth asking. Yes first I would shoot then I would snare but what IF I wanted to use a foothold/conibear?

I would be kind of partial to the Browning 1919. but if you don't have a crew to serve it the Rem .300 mag should suffice.
