WOW, I don't get this move, why RISK another outing?? He's proven he's won the 3 most important races= Triple Crown.
I just don't see the upside, tons of downside: injury, loses...
..hummmmm
Good question, but things have changed over the years. There was a 37 year span that we had no triple crown winner, then along comes American Pharoah. American Pharoah is the only horse to have won the triple crown, and the breeders cup classic in the same year. The breeders cup series was not even in place 37 years ago, so Pharoah was a the first horse with that opportunity, or better put to make that claim.
Now the reason the owners of Justify wish to keep him running is simple. They will more than likely race him in the Haskell invitational( Monmouth Park), and the Travers stakes(Saratoga). These will be races to keep him fresh for the breeders cup classic(Church hill downs) this fall.
If Justify wins both his prep races for the classic, and caps off the year with a classic win, then they could lay claim to a horse with a completely undefeated season as a 3year old, while winning the triple crown, and the classic. American pharaoh didn't even accomplish that, and he had three triple crown wins, plus a classic win. His loss came in the Travers stakes. Pharoahs life time stats were 11 starts and a record of 9-1-0 only finishing out of the money once. If justify could put together an undefeated 3 year old season, with the triple, and classic wins, then that would be a feat that would put him far and above so many other past winners of the triple crown, and classic.
I think one could claim him as one of the greatest if he accomplishes this, and I say that due to the fact of the amount travel required, and so many different track surfaces, and conditions, across a span of the whole season. That would be the complete package, and something very special if it happens. Odds are against it happening, but it sure would be fun to see happen.
