I have a few old guns from my grandfather and I believe the stocks were make from the crotch of walnut... Always thought that the crotch was the most valued wood for higher end gunstocks?
Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes...... Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

yes and no. a couple of the gunsmiths I know use walnut blanks that have aged for at least 5 years (i'm told if there is too much moisture in the wood it warps). if you would like a phone number pm me.

I don't think stumps cut off at the ground would have any value. Way I understand it the fiddleback into a straight grain prized for gun stocks, comes from where a root just turns out and a couple feet of stump above the ground.

the best high end wood is straight grained under the barrel and all the "pretty" grain is in the butt
