Ok bear with me on this. Have another question...can you/have you ever used a tree as an anchor for trapping coyotes? I really don’t know how to describe what I mean other than like you would do a DP for coons. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, it’s the same size wire as the super stakes I use. The only reason I’m wanting to trap in there is I put up a camera for hogs and getting pics of coyotes too.

Plenty of folks do it. The most common way is just a 3/32nd or1/8th cable extension. Jhonny Thorpe also used 2" fence stapels nail to the tree it's self.

I wasn’t exactly planning on setting right against the tree, just using the tree as an anchor point. I can make it as long or short as I need. Guess the only way to find out is to try it. Thanks for y’alls help.

I use 15 ft tether cables. Works like a drag except you know exactly where to start looking.

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

It works. Caught several cats and yotes along old railroad beds that way. I use a 12' extension with a loop on each end. Go around the tree and bring the loops together and attach your trap to the loops. Your 12' extension becomes a roughly 5.5' extension. Swivels at the trap are a must. I swivel at the trap, run the chain over the crossframe where the dog is then add another swivel at that part of the chain. Then i add about another foot of chain

Of course it will work.I've done it a lot for cats but have caught other stuff like red fox and coyotes as well.I know some wolf trappers do it as well. These days I prefer to set it up so the cable can slide around the tree, not cinched tight on it.Like Blak Spot describes. If it can wrap up,animals often will get their shoulder behind the tree and use the tree to power off of.

I still prefer to stake them so they can't reach objects that they can wrap up in or power off of,whenever possible.

I use a 3/32" x 72" 7x7 on just about all my sets.Looped around a tree, log or something not likly to be draged off. I also have 1/8"x 72" 7x19 extension cables.I use ONLY Stainless Steel cable, for all my extensions and snares.

Might have to Re-think extension cables.For coon in a DP tho.But hey, I'm a snarman,and seldum use a DP.

Taximan, I hadn’t thought of that. I like that idea much better, thanks!

I seldom use a drag or stakes (including earth anchors) any more. This mostly due to rotator cuff problems partly caused by pounding stakes and drivers. Nearly everything I set, snares, footholds including DP's, and Conibears, are attached to extensions made from 7x7 3/32 cable, same stuff my snares are made of. In fact, most of my shorter extensions are made from repurposed used snares, and most of them are/were swiveled. ALL are attached to live wood, mostly saplings 4 to 6" diameter, unless I'm fence snaring. Also, a 9 to 10" loop, bottom about 6 or 7" off the ground, top 16 to 17" off, will catch you lots of coyotes and hogs. With this set-up, my deer catch is miniscule, and since I use D-line non lethal cam locks, I can release part of the few that are neck caught. I will quickly add that I don't hang snares in deer territory May 1 thru Dec 1 to protect fawns. Deer stops eliminate all foot & leg catches. A stop leaving abt a 2.5 to 3" loop will still let you snout catch a good many larger hogs. In your country as well as mine, don't be surprised to find coyotes using or passing thru wetlands. Hope some of this info helps you get your feet on the ground. As I mentioned to you once before, you have picked the hardest time of year to start learning to trap. I'm no expert, but I manage to catch some stuff in country similar to yours. Feel free to P M me if you have questions about the above.

When I anchor to a tree as others have described I add a shock spring.
