This Painted Lady showed up on a stump in my yard for the second time yesterday. There are very few this year compared to the past several seasons where I live on the south shore of Lake Ontario.

Year ago I would see a lot of them around some kind of small yellow flower that grew around cow pastures.

Haven't seen much in the way of butterflies yet this spring, not even any Mourning Cloaks, which is unusual.

CD, I believe you are correct. It is a Red Admiral and not an Australian Painted Lady when I went online 6 years ago to identify the species.

This was one of my first early sightings of that "brushfoot" with a Mourning Cloak. I have not seen a Mourning Cloak since.

There has been an increase in numbers of Red Admirals - saw several yesterday and caught one on a stump with its wings briefly folded up.

My first of 2018 Eastern Comma Butterfly showed up briefly in my yard this evening. The photos are of the same individual. It landed on one of my small black walnut trees.

Beautiful pictures.

I have been looking for eggs or holes eaten in the leaves of the milk weed plant but can't seem to find any. I have a lot of milk weed a long some running water at the ranch. I would like to capture some eggs and try to go through the process to full butterfly.

I guess they like certain breeds of milkweed, if you find one on a weed get the seeds from it later.
I saw one that looked like it was hanging, sorta small though.
