How many could a 1/4 to half acre pond support? Friend of mine in a neighboring state has a pond that is infested with snappers.

Yeah, can't really put a number on it. Could be 2, could be 10+.

I think he's already crossed the double digits mark in his efforts.

It may be worth documenting the turtles, microchipping them and putting them on a propagation permit. I suspect that the government will shut down the sale of wild caught turtles fairly soon. You could probably farm them and make money selling the babies. Once they are on the permit, you can sell and harvest the turtles all year and at any size. You will need to fence them in.

Live turtle sales are already prohibited in Ohio and most states have either went that way or soon will.

You can still sell legally obtained, microchipped and documented turtles with a propagation permit.

Yes as they're no longer 'wild turtles'.

Take a wooden fence post and using a post mall drive it into the ground near the waters edge or if you do not want that much exercise take a heavy piece of metal (like an anvil or short piece of railroad track) place it near pond edge and wack it with a 4 pound hammer. In about 2 minutes every snapper in the pond will have his head out of the water. Easier way yet is sit by pond (in your truck) in a severe thundershower, heads will be out of water then also, they do not like vibrations.

Ask our turtle biologist, he's good. He can tell you exactly how many from behind his computer using data collected in states not even his own. Not his own because he won't get out of the air conditioning and count them.
Worthless pos.

The USF&W has listed them on appendix 3 of the CITES treaty, along with the smooth soft shell and spiney soft shell. Making it harder and more cumbersome to export.[paperwork].

As turtles get harder to legally sell, the prices paid will go up for those willing to do the paperwork, because the demand is still there.

Where is the demand? I've never seen turtle for sale in a shop and don't think I've seen it more than I couple times in a restaurant.

I do plan on trapping them next month but just for our own consumption

A lot of the demand was China. If you're close to Asian populations there could be a potential market.

Online sites list meat for 20 to $40 dollars a pound. Even Amazon has it(190 for 5 pounds)

China was buying large numbers of turtles, especially female snappers and female softshells for broodstock.

Locally, Asian markets sell all sorts of turtles, crabs and fish for eating. I was surprised how much common carp, silver carp, bighead carp and white amur I saw in the last Asian market I went to.

I have hoop nets for turtles. But where my friend lives, its drivable for me but only that state's residents are allowed to harvest turtles in that state.

He would'nt know how to count them .Even if he left the office.

Just like anything else.
You need years of hands on experance to understend what your look'n at.
Anyone who thinks that this knowlage come from a book. Is crasy.

I will chanage anyone to a $100.00 a head to sex common snappers.
The game changer is.
WE do it at 25 feet away.
So far I have no takers.
