Finally found out where to get fresh salmon eggs and how to cure them so I'm going to try them this fall, how do I rig for steelhead with salmon eggs and a float? And the river I fish is REALLY deep so is a slip bobber ok to get down near the bottom or will a slip bobber spook them? Is there a better way to find depth from shore other than keep adjusting until you hit bottom?

Trapping is easy you say? You try getting your target animal to step in a 3 inch area of its whole territory.

Use an egg hook. I don't use a Bonner. I cast up stream and let the sack float/tumble back down stream naturally. Keep your rod tip up

The river I mostly fish has a ton of snags on the bottom so I don't think that would work

Between the buoyancy of the eggs and the weight of of the hook you'll be about a foot under water unless the river is super still.

No need for a slip Bobber if you want to use a float. Just use a standard light bobbed and put the hook about 18 inches down maybe 2 feet....I never measured

Should I use split shots to get down to the bottom?

I only drift (bottom bounced) with eggs here in SW Mi, use a sac about the size of dime with some floating beads mixed in, and a nose to toes leader length with #12 hook

I have caught many steelies using a bobber. If you can determine the depth, use a split-shot and float the eggs just above the bottom. If you can float the bait just off the bottom it will make seeing a strike much easier.....set the hook when the bobber bobs!

buy hollow rolls of pencil lead and crimp it on the dropper, then if/WHEN it gets hung, it pulls off and you only lose the lead and not the entire rig
a small Styrofoam float a ft or so from the eggs keeps hook out of most rocks

^^^this is how we wore them out on the Snake and Salmon Rivers in Idaho.

with a longer leader of 3-5 ft we tie on a Chrome Hot Shot, in Blue or Green.
