How fine does your dirt need to be to make waxed dirt ? I sifted my dry dirt through two different sized screens and I have a 5 gallon bucket with "BB" sized to slightly smaller dirt and then a bucket of pretty much dust dirt that was sifted through an old window screen. Will the fine "dust" dirt work to make wax dirt or just make a mess ? -Thanks

It seems most people prefer the finest dirt to wax.

Use local dirt and sift stones and sticks out make sure it is dry dry. Once waxed it should not have any clumps at all.

Wish I had more time to trap....

It is local dirt from the field I trap and sifted to almost flour like consistency.

This will be my first year making waxed dirt. After I make it what are the chances that the wax will melt and it'll make a big wax ball of dirt? There is no place for me to store it in a "cool" environment. Normal temps out here for summer are usually above 100 so the wax itself melts no matter what. Will it do the same once the dirt is added to where I should wait until this fall to make it(which would be sad cuz that's trapping time)

Ya can't miss fur if yur traps are out somewhere.
Or so I've been told.

I don't sift mine at all. I go along a dirt road and just scrape off a top layer of dirt along the edge. Our type of soil along the roads is perfect texture. If needed I might sift out a rock or two when applying it to my set. I don't use powdered dirt. Mine is more of a texture of coffee or larger. It has worked well for me when waxing dirt.

Hern, that is a sweet set up!

I started sifting tonight until the musquitos came out. I set a few of these before I came in.

The picture is deceiving. The 'duff' you ask about is very fine and is dried grass from the mower or pine needles blowing or dropping. Picture of dirt is actually de-composed mulch, and very fine. The 'fine duff' is ok & low percentage of my dirt, the answer is Yes.
Had a friend remove old mulch from his flower beds and had him dump it on our property. I let it there to decompose for trapping dirt. I decompose lawn clippings & leaves for trapping dirt. These decomposed materials, when sifted, are very fine, powder like, if that's what you are looking for in your consistency.
I also use our woods dirt and usually get a dump truck of sifted top soil every few years for trapping dirt.

oneoldboot, drink more Beer. The mosquitoes wont bother you. Youtube garden sifter.

I back up to a sand pile, shovel it into pickup. When I get home i got a 7'x4' framed softer I lean up against tailgate and shovel sand onto it and it rolls down ward on the tarp. Works good for me. I've made a mountain of waxed sand sand this way. About the simplest way I've done yet.
