It took more than just that air rifle as that guy lets on.

They had a cannon rigged to the gunwhale they had to use several times if I remember correctly.

Sacagewea was given credit too for saving their lives. I read somewhere where most tribes could assume they weren't there to wage war b/c they had a woman with them so they allowed them to approach.

I always thought it was interesting that they left from St Louis and they said that one of the first indian camp they stayed at was larger and had a larger population than St Louis.

Neat air rifle though. I had read about it but never seen it before.

The sad fact is that as much as 90 percent of the Indian population was killed off by diseases brought by Europens and much of the success of the pilgrims is in large part due to taking over the fields that had already been cleared by native Americans

In fact the king of England on hearing how the native populations were being decimated by disease have thanks to god for this wonderful plague that had cleared the land for them

There are remnants of large Indian towns all over the east most of which had huge populations often exceeding 10,000 or more

The Mississippian culture had a huge city right near St Louis on the Illinois side of the river.

I knew about and cover this as an Idaho history teacher. Also noteworthy is how they got here. During the Napoleonic war, once Napoleon got wind of this weapon’s use, he issued a statement that any enemy combatant caught with one would be immediately executed. His reasoning was that its silent operation and smokelessness made it a sniper weapon with the operator being undetectable. The Austrians quit using them after that. They were sold off to other countries and private parties. The same manufacturer sold them to people other than Austrians as well. I’m not sure of the year Napoleon issued the statement so whether it was a former Austrian military weapon or originally sold to the Americans by the Italian manufacturer I don’t know.

(There are several sites scattered around the St. Louis area in between and along both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.)

To get a better perspective on the impact of European diseases on native American populations, read Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. It is a fascinating study of why certain peoples and cultures have spread to the detriment of other peoples and cultures.

You would have thought that gun would have become far more popular if it was as powerful as the speaker claimed.
