Can anyone recommend a good pellet rifle for squirrels and rabbits? Would a .22 be better than a .177? Thanks.

The pellet rifle I used years ago was crossman 760 pumpmaster in .177

RWS make some really nice air rifles, heavy though.

I don't know much about air rifles. But every one I've handled is twice if not three times as heavy as your average .22. My brother has one and it won't shoot a paper plate at 20 yards. If you get one they are quiet. Neighbors will never hear you shoot the rabbits out of the yard.

Wouldnt use less than a .22 for squirrels. A full powered .177 is barely adequate for short range nuisance bird control.

I'm not sure how much you're wanting to spend , but on Youtube Sam Woods has an entire series on air rifles . He covers calibers and Brand names for different uses. Check it out, Im thinking you'll be at least in the .22 cal for most small game hunting

I have a gamo that shoots 1,300 fpsi in 1.77 and squirel are usually dead before they hit the ground. It's the speed that kills. Rabbits don't stand a chance. Dnt shoot it much but is alot of fun.good to take with you in the deer stand when ur out for long days and want to thin some squirels.iv taken it on the trap line some too

I've got an OLDER Benjamin Sheridan in .177 that has no problem killing squirrels and rabbits. It's heavy though.

I have hunted squirrels for 25+ years with a variety of air rifles in both .22 & .177. I have killed groundhogs with .22’s. The key is to find the right pellet that is accurate in your gun.

There are many guys killing deer with air rifles in states that allow it.

Here is a link to the most complete selection of air rifles and ammo I know of.

I got a Hastings in .177 and out of all the squirrels I shot only one got away. Also it is the type of pellets you use. The one I use is Crosman that says hunting , it is a pointed tip . I took the hide off the squirrels head and the skull was split in three places.

I have used an Air Arms 410 Carbine for years for small game hunting and have dropped a few foxes with it as well. Mine was in 22 but 177 does just a well and shoots flatter.

I use an old Benjamin on fox squirrels. I got it for Christmas when I was 10. I’m 53 now and I wasn’t easy on things as a kid.

When the rim fire shortage happened I bought a Benjarmin Maurader in 22 specifically for squirrel hunting. It is a PCP and it works really well for squirrels and is quiet. If you walk up to a tree with multiple squirrels in it, you stand a very good chance of getting all of them. Like said above the type of pellet makes a world of difference. If I was to do it again I would have got the 25 cal. but the 22 works well with a heavy expanding pellet as long as it shoots accurate. I have always enjoyed hunting / eating squirrel, and the pellet gun has made it so much more enjoyable.
