My Rem 700 shoots wonderful groups with 130gr Sierra Gameking Bullets and I have no hesitation using it for deer or antelope at any distance that the retained energy is sufficient for a clean kill. For larger game like black bear or elk I am thinking a more robust bullet would be better. I have tried the Nosler 150 gr Partitions but found the accuracy to be less than satisfactory. Does anyone have experience with the 150 gr Barnes TSX (all copper) bullets in a .270?

140 partitions is what mine likes. And I like the performance. But like yours, the game kings shoot paper best.

The Sierra 130gr GK will work just fine. Bullet placement is key. If your rifle likes it, then I would stick with it. If in doubt, contact sierra, talk with one of their bullet techs. Sarge

My vote is for barnes. Elk and bear are tough critters. Pay the money for high quality ammo/bullets, you owe it to the animal as in a quick and clean kill. Whatever you choose remember 2 things, deep penetration and slow expansion.

You put a 130 game king into an elks heart, bottom of his lungs or his spine you wont have to look for it

I've killed 13 Elk including a 300 class Bull with the 130 Game Kings. I'm not too proud to say that all my shots weren't perfect, but I was always able to retrieve the animal. Range ran from 175 to 400, at 400 in my experience the bullet goes clean through most of the animal and stops in the hide on the other side.
To clear up, by not perfect I mean that it wasn't a one shot through the pump house. I had some liver shots and spine shots...fyi and elk can go along way on one lung or a liver shot.

In my opinion the new all copper bullets are great, my wife shot a black bear head on with a slight angle with her 7mm-08 and it traveled some 40 inches and lodged under the skin on the off side. That said the old Remington core locks, are still the deadliest mushroom in the woods. lol
Zim Good luck getting a 700 to shoot the corelock !!! I have 2 a 700 bdl and a a 700 adl. Core locks will have a flyer every time in a 3 shot group. I DON"T MEAN 1/4 inch off ,I"M TALKING 3-4 inches off at 100 yrds. 130 or 150 gr both suck out of my 700. The savage 270 I got will put all three in same hole at that distance. I use federal premium 130 grain in the 700's. PLUS 130 grains is plenty of bullet for elk. Unless you shoot him between the eyes 9 times out of 10 he won't even act like you shot him the first round regardless of what you put thru him. As for bear never killed one , but hear about a lot of black bears falling to a 30-30. I know if a 30-30 will kill one then a 130 gr 270 would put a hurtin on one.....

One more point to be made in favor of the .270. In Wyoming its legal to take down buffalo with a .270 as long as its loaded with at least a 150 gr bullet. My brother killed a beast of a bull Buffalo with his .270, he hammered it twice with the 150's. I'm pretty sure the first shot killed it as I think that was the heart shot but he shot again just to be sure. That huge animal only made it about 30yds before going down, it was 150yd shot. I know its not a 130 gr, but it thought the story really showcased the toughness of the cartridge on "Big" game.

Zim Core lokt is what I use. They shoot well out of both the 700 bdl and sps.

Scuba1, the 130gr Barnes TTSX is what I am going to try after reading that the Rem 700 rate of twist won't stabilize the 150 gr copper bullets (lead core in 150 gr is fine). 140s are supposed to be OK but I decided to try the 130s since my rifle shoots the 130 GK so well. Excellent choice, you can kill almost anything with a cup and core bullet but why take a chance on the bullet blowing up and jacket separation before deep enough penetration. Also, copper doesn't weigh as much as lead so your 130 gr bullet will be closer to the size of a 140 gr. Barnes bullets normally do better from 30 to 50 thousandths off your lands and like to go fast. Good luck

Jack O'Connor shot Every Big game animal in North America and some African game with 130gr bullets. Yep, so I've used Sierra Pro Hunter or Game Kings (whatever's on sale) for decades and never lost a critter. I did step up to 150 gr for elk and bear though. Its MORE about where you put the bullet. If you'll try and deflate both lungs, they never go far. Avoid heavy shoulder bones. If I couldn't see the ribs, it went in the neck.......and PLOP!

I used the 130 rem.corlok for years. the always ran with lung shot. switched to the barnes TSX 130 shoot good and they either dont run or very little. Deer or black bear. love them. Eat right up to the bullet hole.

Nosler partition. " Overall" the best bullet ever made.

I used the 130 rem.corlok for years. the always ran with lung shot. yep, very unpredictable/unreliable performance for decades.....some folks like them though. My friends that still like them are neck shooters.

Neck shots are very unpredictable. Not here to start a debate on neck shooting but there are no vital organs in the neck. The spine, yes which is part of the cns, (central nervous system) does work but you better be either lucky or darn good at anatomy.
Let me ask the neck shooters this, if you are land trapping and have a critter you would like to take home do you shoot it in the neck???
I rest my case, carry on.

rp a neck shot should be called a throat shot. when the animal is looking at you a shot in the center of the throat will hit the spine and drop it in its tracks. when shooting the neck from the side its difficult to know exactly where to put the bullet and is not a good choice IMO. lots easier to put the bullet in the animals heart.
tried a texas heart shot on a big muley one time. (shot in the anus when facing away) I missed by about 1 1/2 inches to the right side. ruined most of one ham. deer dropped and thrashed around some but didn't get up. wont do that again.

If the animal is looking at you, you should be aiming for the soft spot in the low neck just above the front rib cage. That way you take out the top of heart and lungs. With this shot, even if your off a bit a good bullet will still bust bone and make it to the vitals.
Archers do not take neck shots, there is a reason for that. If they do they are slobs.
