New trolling motor, some assembly required.

The nut that comes with the prop is a nylon nut. There is an inch of bolt the nut needs to travel to properly seat the prop so the shear pin doesn't fall out the other side. Needless to say, that nut is not going to work.

Probably used nylon so as to not have the nut loosen on its own accord. To remedy that you'll need to drill a cross hole through the shaft and put a wire or cotter pin through the new steel castle nut like the pros do.

I doubt the trolling motor has enough oomph to need a steel castle nut anyway. The nylon nut will be fine.

It's only 30# thrust at the highest setting, it's for a kayak.

Why won't the nut work?

Is it an acorn nut?

It won't go past the top of the bolt before locking up.

Is it the right prop? Are you missing a bushing? Maybe look for a parts schematic.

Mine had an open nylon nut, followed by a nylon acorn nut. You may have missing pieces. Can you check a packing list or where you bought it?

If it's a "lock-nut" you may have to hold the prop to run it on.

Yep, just make sure the prop is seated in the sheer pin, than hold the prop while you tighten the nut.

Might be a missing some pieces. I got the motor as part of a kit with the mounting bracket. Will have to chase the list.

Some of them have a slot in the end of the shaft for a flat screwdriver to keep the shaft from turning when you turn the nut, this is handy if you shear the pin.

What Dave Said ^ Make sure the Prop is Seated then hold to tighten. I have a 55lb thrust with a same lock nut works great.

Mine works great as well with the nylon nut. I also have a nylon nut on my 25hp Mercury. No shear pin, has always work d perfectly.

If you wanna do it right look up the TH Marine Prop Nut, for guys like me with high powered trolling motors in heavy grass it is priceless for ease of removal. I couldn't stand the little nut that you get with them either

Gotta live up to the nickname...
