Or he was in total sync with his surrounding after living there for years and having dealt with thousands of train interactions.

I guess it's lost on you, but his jaywalking down the street and in the way of the escape route of the car prevented the car from pulling forward to the side of the train...which is why the driver was flustered.

Stupid dufus with the coffee completely unaware of his surroundings caused the whole deal.

No Darwin Award is offered if the perpetrator does not die. That driver did a masterful job of escaping that situation, especially given that they had plenty of time to fill their drawers numerous times.
