I have a fur room just a bit bigger than yours Ditch. I used the vogelzang style you showed and with the fan I had circulating the air I stayed very comfortable. I used mostly cut up skids, wire spool ends and the slates between them. I had to feed it quite often the first year but was able to keep the room comfortable. During the following summer I dissembled it and cleaned all the joints up then sealed it up. I even sealed the removable top plate. Can't remember the name of the stuff. I then fired it up like directions said to cure the joint compound. That following year I was able to control the burn a lot better being all the joints were sealed. I think it would work real good for you. I paid fifty bucks for mine. So looks like the price he wants is pretty reasonable.

With a damper it pipe and the mixture of green and dry wood you can get about as much or little heat as you want.

Vogelzang? Got the identical looking stove in my 10x16 shed. Easy to light and once a bed of coals is there easy to control the heat. Found you need a damper in the stove pipe AND a small piece of metal below the door (on the inside ) to control the draught, other wise it puts out to much heat .I use pine But hardwood like oak or maple would really regulate heat easier, imo

Catch- the grate isn't broken, just larger openings than needed. Here's some pictures

There's also the pictures of the cook top and opening.

Grampy- I do have a damper in the stove pipe but it is about 1 1/2- 2' above the stove, due to how the pipe hooks to the stove (skinny oval shape). The Vogelzang has a spot for a damper right where the pipe connects to the stove, and it has a removable damper plate at the bottom of the door on the OUTSIDE (you can see it in the pictures).

I had a vogelzang wood stove for a few years, definitely cranks out the heat. You can always leave the door open a bit. I have a blue flame heater for my shop, no outside ventilation. Keeps a 32'x 24' well insulated shop more than comfortable. In my climate air is very dry in the winter, havent ever noticed too much humidity in my shop. Dry fur in it all the time. My blueflame has a built in thermostat, burns very little propane in a month. Putting a blueflame in the new shop as well.

Gotcha, that grate looks good. You have the draft on the pipe and should have one on the ash door and/or the load door. You should be able to control her very well. I had one similar to yours and an old warm morning stove. They all have there own personality for sure and I really think she should do what you want.

I like the idea of making a new grate to put on top of the existing one, might do that if I stick with this stove. I have actually thought of buying a bag of charcoal and putting some in. I thought it might stay above the grate and help keep me from starting a new fire every hour....

Really good coal that burns long and hot with hardly any ash. It is awesome alone or used with wood.

That Sun Oak is made for Coal, not wood.
The Boxwood sucks air thru every joint. When I used mine I learned to build a small kindling fire, rake the coals to the center first then put 2 big chunks side by side so it burns between the 2. If it needs encouragement or starts to burn down, put another chunk on top in the middle.
It's learning curve.

BigBob- I seen that you can get a grate/stand for the boxwood. Did you use one in your stove?

Nope, worked fine without, and not enough room to add logs with one.
