OK. title says it all. WHO has used coyote meat OR coyote parts as bait? The reason I ask? Im going on 4 back to back jobs that are 14 days each. I can only haul so much bait down to south Alabama. John Ehn and several Old time wolfers used coyote meat. In John Ehns book , he talked about meat off the hams. He talked about useing the feet. He talked about a WHOLE coyote shoved down a deep dirt hole with a big rock covering it. So my thought were to cut out bladder to get urine, use anal glands to make lure, use feet as bait as well as meat of hams of coyotes. I already have had GREAT luck with cutting hair of the tail= and anal area . I put it in zip lock bag and use it down deep dirt holes and at baited flat set, with good results. SO who uses coyote parts OF the coyotes they catch to catch more coyotes??

Animal parts catch fur not the hocus pocus advertisements for business.I have always been big on using animal parts.

Recently, I have started reading LOTS of books by Old time wolfers. They used every part of the aniamls they caught. They drug their baits behind them sometimes and simply Cut off a peice for bait. MY thinking is = if it worked for the old time wolfers then - why wont it work for me know? Plus I get to save money.

I've used the feet. I'll punch a hole vertically put foot down it until just pad is above ground, pound ground tight around the part in hole with hammer, put some urine or gland lure on foot. Basically a scent post with coyote foot. Works as good as any other set for me. If you miss the coyote they usually pull the foot and leave with it.

Yep I've used the feet of coyotes and fox down a hole or even tossed in to a thick brush pile

A coyote doesn't spend its' life searching for perfumes and secret ingredients and all that stuff. The food chain is nothing new and animals eat and are attracted to other animals and natural smells. Some more than others.How many thousands of coyotes are caught at bait stations and snares every year?It all boils down to having a good population available.It doesn't matter how many dvd's or classes are available teaching the same principles over and over,I have yet to find one that is done where there aren't many animals to begin with.Get in an area where there are 4 cats per square mile or 15 coyotes per square mile,you are going to catch alot of fur.Alot of folks want that magic pill that will somehow provide results that are simply not there.

Most of the places I am trapping I have been on for the last 4-5 years. I try hard to not habitualize the place with same set OR same baits. I try to mix things up , as much as I can. I have used the deer legs as post sets before. I wire them down they work well. SO I will use coyote feet, for Post sets and chunck of coyote meat down deep dirt hole this trip. Just looking to keep mixing it up. All ways trying new things.

Yes sir . I saw that. My clients dig large pits with dozer. Thats were I pile my coyotes. I shoot them with a 22 pistol threw the chest. Less blood. I may have to haul a dead coyote in back of my 2012 tacoma for 7-8 hours to get back to the hole. Point is, it already stinks. So opeaning up the stomach in 100 degree heat would REALLY stink up my truck. But I bet it would be great bait. Cut off feet with Hack saw, cutout anal glands, AND maybe cut meat of hams will be my plan I think. I have a sack full of tail hair already

I have used all parts. Those old books and articles have a lot of good information. All parts work well. a good sharp axe is quicker.

Thw more I read about the old wolfer , the more I realize how easy we have it. Plus I think there is LOTS to be learned from the old wolfers. Their ways maybe in the past. But you can argue with the numbers they caught, and the limited supplys they had. Getting back to the basics can be a bad thing

Lots of those guys started out on horseback too. At times there were many more coyotes than we have right now. I like the idea of chiseling a rock so a chain can be wrapped around it and wired and then just using your rock as the backing with the trap chained to it. What could be more natural for a coyote?
If you are looking for fast and easy just cut off the parts you want and toss them in a hole right where you catch them or take them out of the trap and leave the carcass close by. That will attract other coyotes too. Then set you trap back. Coyote trapping can be a dirty business hauling around everything you need.

Larry, I have read some of the same things. To ME that would have been a GREAT life. In fact, to most of the wagon and horse trappers they looked at trapping as a life style more than a job. Most of my jobs reguire head counts. On my larger jobs I place the coyotes in a large hole dug with a 955 dozer. Then send the = Land Manager a dayly picture of predator count. SO leaving a whole carcass is not an option for me. Thats why I may just take Chunks of the hams of coyotes. And some tails,feet, and glands.

15 per square holy buckets, I'm lucky to have 3. I'll buy Boone's DVD... I'll even come film it LOL

I am talking catching 12 to 15 off of several sections every year,not residing.
