Last summer my 14 year old grandson was helping me do some work in the yard. I told him to get a tool for me from the gas box in the shop. This confused him, he said "what do you mean a box of gas"? I took him in the shop showed him the box and explained to him what it was.

Heck yeah I remember that. Gas, mostly 80/87, Blazo, Kerosene. Still have several boxes around in use as cupboards. Real typical in rural cabins. I have one just like that on the deck right now full of kindling.

Those cans were WAY easier to transport and store. And many a cabin, including mine, are decked out in Blazo box cabinetry.

We referred to them as "gas boxes," but more commonly as "Blazo boxes."

I wish I still had a bunch of those boxes in town. I still have 5 or 6, but wish I had more. Drill two holes in each end and put on rope handles; just the right size for any number of tasks. Kindling storage is probably the most common.

Those square cans packed a lot easier into a sled or a plane than the round ones do. They were also handy for making really small stoves for a tent or ..filled with sand.....they made good supports for a barrel stove in a cabin

I wonder if those boxes have any collector value, I know where there's about 30 of them?

In civilized America, they are called collector's items and are featured in prominent displays in millionaire's homes.

I have a California aunt who stole all my Grandpa's junk and when my sister went to visit her, she said all that stuff was on display.
Better keep those boxes as if the world does not end, you have some money there, as in you probably should be collecting your neighbor's junk cheap before they get wise.

I don't remember them. Curious what years they were used? 40s, 50s?

I don't know the exact dates but pretty sure my father-in-law was using them in the 1930's, and we were still getting Blazo in them on up until some time in the late '70's. I've still got around a dozen of the boxes. Some of the labels read "Pearl Oil Kerosene", Standard Oil unleaded white gas, Stanavo Aviation Gasoline, Standard Aviation Gasoline, Chevron Aviation Gasoline, Chevron Blazo Fuel , Chevron Pressure Appliance Fuel, Chevron Solvent, and there may be a few others.

Stanavo ave-gas was sold by standard oil company, before Standard Oil became Chevron Oil Company. If I remember right the last boxes of Blazo I bought was labeled Chevron Pressure Appliance fuel instead of Blazo, but it was the same stuff, and that would have been sometime in the late '70's.
