So I got this new little Mt cur pup who is 9 weeks old. It's been a long time since I had a dog so I don't have a clue what would be best to treat them with. What are you all using for your dogs? Thank you!

Last time I was at the Vet she said a lot of people are killing their dogs by overdoing it with all the options expecting instant results.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Vectra is what we have been using recommended by our vet , front line before that , the vet changed recommendation so we went with it 85 pound GSD she is outside alot
the small dog wears a Seresto collar but she is outside a lot less and is under 10 pounds.
for the puppy I would do Soresto collar and ask vet when it is right to go vectra
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I use frontline on my lab. I tried a cheaper brand that I dont remember the name off the top of my head, but I constantly found ticks on him. Went back to frontline and the problem went away.

Vectra here in Eastern Montana keeps the fleas, ticks and biting flies away from our Plott Hound / Border Collie mix. Been using it for three years now.

Something that's fast acting that really works well is Adams Flea & Tick spray.

Seresto collars worked the best in the past 40 yrs of bird dogs!!! They don't live long enough as it is, why poision him all his life? They have to bite the dog for the oral stuff to work, with the collars there dead b4 they bite. Food 4 thought. Collars work for 8 months. Good deals online usually.

Hmm. I put a seresto collar on my pup about a week ago. He still has fleas. Not nearly as many fleas as he did have, but he still has some.

Hmm. I put a seresto collar on my pup about a week ago. He still has fleas. Not nearly as many fleas as he did have, but he still has some. That's been my experience with Seresto collars as well. I bought one after recommendations on here, worked about a month and the fleas were back. I bought another one and had the same results. To be fair, my dog swims a lot. But Bayer (maker of the collar) claims eight months effectiveness for non-swimmers and five months if the dog swims. I didn't get anywhere near that. I had poor results with Advantix, also made by Bayer and Frontline. Nothing seems to keep the fleas off my dog! I finally started treating him with Sevin dust and it works but I don't like using it. He has an appointment at the vet to get some Nexgard. I don't know what else to do.
Eh...wot?

Thank you! x100 seresto X2. Just ordered 2 more off amazon for $108. Pricey, but they work good. Put them on all 3 of our dogs last fall. This winter our blue heeler chewed one off my feist. This feist has fleas now but the other feist and heeler don't.

I don't know what it's called though, I've always just asked for one of those flea pills, lol. It's a tannish pink color chewable tablet about the size of a quarter, but thicker. And there won't be a flea one... but with 5 dogs, 150 a month just for fleas (it doesn't work on ticks) is pretty insane.

UPDATE***** Just seen the vet today and this is what he recommended, not sure that this is what I'll use because thanks to everyone I have a lot to research. Anyway he said to use Simparica for the flea and tick treatment which is 85 bucks for 6 months. He also said I should use ProHeart 6 which is a heartworm shot every 6 months for around 40 bucks. How many squirrels and coons will she have to tree to pay for all this lol. Thanks everyone for the replies!!

Soresto collar. Works great for me. I haven't had fleas since I stay using them. Lol. Seriously though, they cost about 60 bucks and last 8 months and my dogs have not had any flea or tick problems and this year is bad in my area.
Wish I had more time to trap....

As I mentioned above, nothing I tried was keeping fleas off my dog, none of the topical medications worked. I tried Frontline, Advantix and the Seresto collar. At best I’d get a couple of weeks out of them then the dog would be infested again. There’d be a dozen or more fleas crawling around on his crotch.
In desperation I called my vet and they recommended Credelio, a once-a-month chewable. I read clinical studies on it and they were very positive so I bought a three-month supply. It works, the fleas are finally under control.
Eh...wot?

Nice Lug, glad you found something that works for your dog! I had my pup out in the hay fields and woods today for the first time so we'll see tonight if she is critter free lol.

What did you end up getting, the Simparica? It looks like I might, so far, but I will be looking into that Credelio. Vet is giving me free samples of the squirt on the back of the neck stuff till she reaches 6 months old.

I have found that a good flea bath first and THEN the withers liquid does a much better job.

Permethrin spray. Incredibly inexpensive. I use the same stuff I spray my clothes with to spray on my dog. Around his head and neck I soak a rag and rub him down with it. He hasn't had a flea or tick in years. Can't really remember the last time.
Nowadays it just don't pay to be a good 'ol boy.

People get snookered into paying WAAAYYY too much money for pets. $20 for a quart of Absorbine's "UltraShield EX" lasts all summer. Stops fleas and ticks for two weeks, mosquitoes and flies for three days. Totally waterproof, so spray the dog twice a month and forget about it. $40 for a vial of Ivomec (1% Ivermectin solution which treats heartworm and a few other worms) lasts five years for one dog. We've been using the above for over a decade on many dogs. Easy, safe, effective and CHEAP. So for $140 you're good for five years. Less than $30/year. But hey, it's your money. Do what you want. See www.terrierman.com for some down to earth talk about dog health care.
