I once thought I did ok for the season until I subtracted the money spent replacing traps, lure, bait, earth anchors, etc. I ended up in the hole! You have to be where the needed furs are paying the most money to make a profit. The market says that coyotes are the fur to trap right now but my coyotes are on worth $20 to $25, not $130 so it is very difficult to end up in the black.

I trapped fur full time before I got married farmed in the summer always turned a proffit. But for me know to turn a megger profit is a little different, catch everything cut cost every were (I use no throw away products wire, dirt, home made lure and bait only) lots of blind sets I run a line to work and back home, eny travel along my normal route is free travel during work and I walk a lot, even 25 cent possums buy 25cents worth of gas! I keep meticulass records and I can usually turn a profit though the last few seasons it's only been in the double digets! I can mount and sell a few thangs every yr that helps allot ( 500 doller ky cats and 100 doller mink help profit alot). I enjoy trapping and will always run a few no matter what but turning a profit is a fun challenge for me and not a dirty word! Can't count your time for nothing if you start doing that get a factory job and give up all other indevers! Trapping is a small buissenes, ask a small business owner if he gets payed over time or just 40 hr and how much would get done if he pulled no over time! Colt

Fast food businesses make a lot of money on soft drinks. The disposable cup is $0.10. The flavoring, carbonation and water totals $0.15. Throw in $0.25 for labor and overhead and the total cost is ~$0.50 a glass regardless of size. The cost to the customer however is $1.75 or more so this is one item that offsets other items where the costs are higher. Thus, profit is being made.
Hardware stores sell 4-pack aluminum ferrules at 5 times what you’d pay for them at a trapper’s supply place. Shoe stores, clothing stores, automotive parts stores, all have 100+ % markups and at some point, especially with high product turn over, they’ll see profit. I won’t even get into the $10 aspirins nor the $75 boxes of Kleenex hospitals charge. Or the gazillions whole-life insurers make, while paying you a minimal 3% on your money.
As trappers, besides the inherent benefits of being outdoors, what is our “ace in the hole” or ‘low cost-high profit’ item that gives us a financial incentive to keep trapping? I’m thinking there is no real financial incentive for hobby trappers to stay with it. The love of the sport is where it’s at. For long liners and lure makers, I’d assume you know where the break even point and the point in which there is enough profit to stay in the game.
I tried to figure it out one time. Many times, actually. Mileage always pushed me from profitability to loss. At today’s tax rate for mileage, it doesn’t pay to be driving a 16 mile per gallon vehicle. With low fur prices, you have to knock off over 100 decent coon just to pay for gas some years. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve trapped un-profitably for many years and I’m not about to quit any time soon. But, for those who routinely see an income from trapping, where does it come from? The missing piece to this concept is that before there is any profit margin, even on low cost items, you have to cover all of your overhead. So if a restaurant is not covering overhead, then they are still losing money selling fountain sodas. I have not been fur trapping since the recent collapse. I caught a few fox off my place for the fun of it. The goal for me on trapping was not to make money but at the same time I don't plan to do all that work to lose money and continue to flood the market. However I do have a damage license and do part time damage work. That is 90% profit for me because I already have the equipment, and other than cost of license and gas I have no additional overhead. So I guess that would be my ace in the hole.

I swear we are the only people on earth basically giving our products away and we are happy to do it. Ive been eating cat chit with a knitting needle the last 10 years with fur and cant figure out how to make it pay.

To run a 23 mile line on dirt roads, in fields, in both 2 and 4wd, hauling a fairly heavy load in my Mule diesel it uses approximately 1.5 gallons of fuel. So about $4.00 per day.
At a net loss of $5.00 per raccoon, I must catch a lot of them to pay for the fuel!

Back in the day of great fur prices, it was great to make good catches, work up the fur and make some good money. 5 foxes in one morning at $100 each paid for a lot of gasoline at 45 cents per gallon in 1980.
However fur and trap theft were common. I set up a lake for muskrats - 150 traps. The next day, I could not find any traps. Whoever did it was thorough!

Daily check laws makes it hard. With 3.00 gas. I envy the trappers with more lenient check laws. Even 48 would help a bunch.
Common sense catches alot of fur.. Pay homage to all you harvest..

Ha, very funny. It seemed like the wrong lake. I had exclusive permission. Stakes were below waterline. Obvious muskrat dens, runs, and feedbeds.
That was only 38 years ago. GPS was not available even if invented then.

I work on a ranch that is almost entirely private land. I am the only one trapping this country. What do I make? The only thing that I do not pay for is fuel and vehicle maintenance, which is paid for by the ranch. What I make each year in furs definitely pays for the lures and baits, but not the other traps, chain, and cable I need to buy. Do I still trap every year? (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) yeah!! I'll continue to due so until the day I die, or they make it illegal. Might even continue after that. Hehehehe! To me it's really not about the money, but more about the lively hood of the stock that I look after. The coyotes don't work on my calves a lot, but they can play (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) on my lambs. The more I can catch the better off I am. I have 7 or 8 neighbors and only 1 of 2 that traps. So there is definitely an abundance of coyotes, and bobcats, not to mention mountain lion. What do I make? Probably nothing, but I do have 4 sons that will definitely know how to trap something when the time comes in their future.

short answer... In our day jobs
But in all seriousness I plan on marketing trapping and night hunting around here for yotes and hogs. We have a good amount of ranches and farmers and in some parts of this state the hogs are completely out of control. As a fur trapper I would say high numbers on your states no limit furs would be the best way to make money.
At the rate I'm going it will.be a couple years before I make any real money after building my trap and tool supply. One day maybe but I think I will have to have a pretty steady night hunting gig to make some real cash.
