Do any of you grow pawpaws. Any hints to growing them and sources for seedings/seeds.

I finally have some persimmons that look like they may make it-A few are about six feet tall. Now I want to try pawpaws again.

Wild paw paws grow in the shade of large trees in low lying areas around here

Where did you get the persimmons? I’d love to try them

In September the paw paws are ripe. Shake the tree and they fall out and you can get the seeds out of the fruit. I get some almost every fall from a local park.

Just passin through

I got mine a couple years ago from Musser Forest. I checked their website and the don't offer them anymore. They don't have pawpaws now either.

MO dept of conservation sells them. I have persimmons and one tree really produces. I planted some paw paws but the only choice was full sun. They didn't thrive and were cut off.

Check out NAFEX (North American Fruit Explorers). They have a paw paw coordinator and can source nurseries and other contacts for you. I believe there is a nursery in Michigan that is pretty well thought of.

What I do know of paw paws is that they are adapted to wooded river bottom type land and need good rich soil to thrive. University of Nebraska has a paw paw program with trees being grown out in the open and that seems to be the most productive way to raise them.

For info: Ky state University pawpaw program. One source for plants is One Green World Nursery , Portland Oregon. There are several nurseries in the east that carry them, but they are often sold out of the best varieties.

If you want lots of fruit, you need two of them, and they can't be root suckers of each other. They have a strange pollination process which prevents them from self-pollinating.

Check out river areas. Around here you can find piles of paw paw trees along the edges of rivers. Not sure of any legal issues involved in removing trees from state/national parks or WMO.

Hang roadhit in your paw paw patch if you want good pollination. Flies are the main pollinators.

This guy bred a huge fruited version from local ones and sells them through nurseries.
Peterson's Paw Paws
There are also directions on germinating and growing them on the website. You might want to search videos for "tiny desk kitchen; paw paws", Peterson is in the video

I'm growing some from local seeds, but they're only about 2' tall so far.

I have 1 Paw Paw tree, by itself, and is loaded with fruit this year.

You must have one somewhere relatively nearby. They don't have to be right next to each other for pollinating insects to do their work.
In my situation, I am in the middle of the suburbs with no natural areas with pawpaw trees anywhere nearby.
Years ago I had 2 trees, one was a transplant and the other came from seed. I had lots of fruit! Then the wife chopped down one of them several years ago and we haven't had more than a dozen or so each year.
