Hey all...... have a question. I got a couple 15 gallon drums from a car wash that had a cleaning and drying agent (polymer) in them . The warning on the label has a black exclamation mark in a red diamond displayed. I have always cleaned sprayers and other chemical barrels by rinsing a bunch of times. And using ammonia liquid to clean the barrels. I am going to have the MSDS sheet faxed to me from the MFG company. I want to clean out these drums and use when we go out elk hunting for water to cook, clean and shower with. Not for drinking. I think I'll be ok. I have a 55 gallon drum that had cooking bourbon (took along time to get rid of that smell) that I use but it takes up too much room in the back of the truck. I think I'll be ok.... not deadly poison or corrosive at all. Any Comments????

A fift33n gallon drum in a back of a pickup doesn't take up that much more accomodation than 3 five gallon buckets from the bakery. Would you rather your water scramble your nuts and make your eyes point eifferent directions or have a slight taste of Bismarck doughnut glaze?

I have used all sorts of drums for water for personal use. including industrial glue. That one was a birch to clean up. I would say go for it. Upside is, you won't need soap to clean it

Find food grade barrels. Ones used for food stuff.

I have some stop by and you can have em.

Personally I would not worry

You've already done the right thing, getting the Safety Data Sheets. Read up and you should be good to go.

The fact that it has a hazard material sticker on it would be my reason to look further, I think I'd trust a washed out steel drum over a plastic drum that might leach chemicals back into your water over time. Just the way I look at it.

Cooking with the water has got to be the same as drinking it, no? If it makes direct contact with your food ,you're consuming the water still. Unless you're using it to heat up an MRE for example.

if you can get chlorine barrels you are much better off

I found that while it costs more money the 6.5 gallon water jugs are just so much easier to handle , get in a truck and pour from in a controlled way that it is worth it.

I spend a bunch of years hauling 15 gallon acid and chlorine carboys around with the original product in them.

Iodine and dairy line cleaning solution are also common barrels to be able to get around here , check and see if you can get any of those they would be much better options already food grade and contained food safe cleaners.

rectangular containers also let you pack more in the truck

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I am with LawDog on this one, plastic tends to absorb and hold the flavor, steel drum I'd go for it plastic=use it to store traps in. Any water carried into camp is drinking water, if you cook with it or wash food or dishes with it it is the same as drinking it.

Plastic is porous. Holds the parent chemical even after many rinses. If you cant find food grade containers get the 5 gallon collapsible cubes. Then fit in a milk crate perfectly for stacking.
