They like plenty of sulfur.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I am going to make my first attempt at growing garlic this fall and wondered if any out there have preferences or can list varieties that have done the best for them. As well - anyone with advice on where to get seed stock would be appreciated. Hey Blackdog, if you will pm me your addy, I will send you a dozen or so cloves and some contacts for more. Consider this a random act of kindness. Zim

I have tried garlic 2x. I like it on everything from my eggs, to pizza and everything in between. I put mine in pots the last time because that is what an old Italian guy told me he does, mulched them with straw, but was not impressed with the return. They didn't get big bulbs and only had like 2-3 cloves. Not sure what I did wrong. I planted elephant garlic, Italian garlic, and one other I cant remember.

Which of the garlic types do best for growing in summer heat in clay type soils? I know adding lots of organic matter and loosening up the soil is best, but I have what I have for soil. Also which types store the longest? Silverskins and artichokes are the longest storing. I have clay loam and all I've tried haven't had soil issues. Heat on the other hand is the limiting factor for some. Creoles are reported to actually prefer heat to cold. I've yet to try them.

German reds here too. Plant them November 1 and mulch with straw. Harvest them about now. They will keep for about a year. Hardnecks grow better for me. I just pulled mine and planted green beans where I pulled them to add some nitrogen to the soil for when I plant them in the fall. I have been growing the same ones for about 15 years and just keep planting the biggest and best bulbs right back in the same bed every fall. It acts like it is growing better all the time so maybe it is changing some over time?
Great pictures!
Just passin through

Pick the scapes off when they are still small. It helps the strength go to the bulb and the scapes are great when they are small and tender.Almost like chives or scallions.Great in salads
