Inherited a pile of coins, i have no idea what to do with... Is there anyone here that could give me an idea if they're important or not?
Should i even bother having them looked at? I was just gonna keep them as a novelty for kids and grandkids to look at
My grandparents were travellers so there's Zambia, Uganda, Brazil, France, Denmark, and some middle eastern countries (i can't read arabic, but most of the years appear to be from the 1920s-30s?) Etc....
They go back as far as about 1840s it seems. But mostly 1890-1930

My grandfather was a hunter and trapper in the laurentian mountains of Quebec Canada his whole life after he stepped off a boat from Scotland, and we (my entire family) had no clue he cared about coins. But it appears that he was collecting old coins.
Isn't it amazing what you learn about someone after they pass away.... You can always know someone better....

Here are some pictures... They were all simply kept in 4 boxes that were packed in the basement. There is also a small amount of paper money, mostly french notes, and mostly from around 1944.

Seems like he was into Canadian history in a way that we never knew, because it seems that he's found old coins from all the provinces that he could find.

He trapped until 83 and passed away at 92... What a life.

You better get them appraised by someone you can trust. Bet there's some pretty valuable stuff mixed in there. Google numismatic appraisers.

They are worth getting looked at. Most likely some silver ones in that pile by the looks of it.

What ever you do ..... don’t rub them or clean them
Looks like the penny is worth some $ 100 Canadian

Definitely do NOT attempt to clean them. And avoid handling them a lot, unless you are wearing gloves.

Might sound kind of silly, but cleaning and greasy fingers can lower coin values. Especially if you don't know what you've got.

I would suggest getting 2, maybe even 3 appraisals. And check the integrity of the appraisers.

Those are very cool. Even if they aren't worth much money I bet those are a prized possession given the family history.
