Any wood carvers aboard?
As a boy scout I cut my finger(pretty good cut) and had to wear a finger cast at camp. It was the middle finger. LOL.
Anyway as a beginner I'd like to hear (read) some advice from you if you are into it.
Also as a start is mulberry a good carving wood? We are taking out some trees that are growing in our hedge and I'll save them if they are good for carving.
thanks
just

I do some carving but only about 3 to 5 a year. Not sure your interest but I like doing larger carvings. My work is all one chip at a time no electric tools, no chainsaw used in the carve except for cutting the log to size. I use hand tools such as chisels, gouges etc..
There are some very talented carvers on this site I hope they can chime in and help you out. I'm not sure if Mulberry would be wood or not but if dry anything will carve. I'm not sure if I can give you any instructions etc. because I just start a project and I have no idea what it will be in the end. LOL I have no method and I go by no patterns just start chipping away. Good luck it is fun to be creative and use your imagination and to see the end point.

Snowy, i love the old codger in the centre.

I used to carve a lot, i come from a carving family. (Some of the photos are of coasters i had made of my family's work)

Goose, Puffin, ovenbird??? i think- Are my mothers (the bases are also carved, this helps things look more cohesive, if you use real rocks/wood/plants, it sometimes makes your bird look less realistic. That's my tip of the day.
Cutting board, Knifeblock and eagle - Mine
Totem pole and small west coast piece - Grandfather

Those are just the pics i have on my phone, there are lots of other carvers in my family. And i'm sure there are atleast a thousand works out there by my immediate family.

Unlike snowy, i use plenty of modern tools, starting with a band saw to rough out the basswood i tend to use. then hand tools, dremel with multiple bits, word burning pen, etc...
