Anyone ever encounter a PO'd bull on the trapline?

I don't know what made me think of this today, but many years ago when I was in my early twenties I recall walking through, what I thought was a heifer and dry cow pasture to pull two fox sets I had on a high grassy hill just out of the pasture fence on the far side.
I remember seeing the 20 or so cattle way down on the opposite end of the pasture a good 300 yds away. With traps retrieved and on my way back through the pasture I had just turned the corner where the pasture lane led back to the barn. Not really paying attention to the cattle and ambling down the lane I here a Fa-lump Fa-lump Fa-lump from behind me... Out of nowhere comes this big, mostly white holstien bull, head down, at full steam straight at me.
I had about 3 strides to get up enough speed to high jump the taunt 5 strand fence. I barely made it over but my trap bag got hung up in the fence. The bull slams into fence as I am rolling on the ground to get away as I hear the wire screech and a cedar fence post crack. luckily the fence holds while I get to my feet and start running away. I hear the bull let out one of those low gutteral bellars as I look back to see the wires stretched tightly across his brisket

I remember back at the truck, looking back at the bull still pacing back and forth in that section of lane .
I figured that moving on down my line and retrieving my trap bag and traps still hanging in the fence at a later time would be best...

I have never encountered a PO'd bull on the trapline, but working cows in fields I have. A fist sized rock to the nose or a swing to the bleachers, to the nose, with a thick stick, will teach a bull or aggressive cow some manners.

When I am working with the bull a t-ball bat has always came in handy.

That is crazy! When I was 20 I went on a diy muledeer hunt on state land in Wyoming. I was walking by myself and came out of a washout in to a group of cows and calf's. I thought I could just walk though them. A calf 10 yards to my right started to bawl and a cow 10 yards to my left started to come at me. I was 5 or so yards from the washout as she charged towards her calf. I brought my 06 to my shoulder and ran backwards until I tumble in to the washout and landed on my back, she stood at the top looking down at me with the cazy eye. The rest of the day I was spook with the thought it was almost her or me!

Last season was the first time I have ever actually trapped in the field with cows. It was a learning experience to say the least. The bull inside that fence had quite an attitude, and it didn’t take long to figure out to keep my head on a swivel when I was inside that fence. He was usually ok as long as he had hay, but if he didn’t have anything to eat he was POed all the time. It got to the point where I started stopping at the barn every day and throwing out 2 square bales just to save the aggravation of having to deal with him. I wish the most scary story didn’t involve a non target catch, but I probably shouldn’t tell it on here. In short, that dang bull almost rolled the RZR one day. Good thing I looked back in time to mash the gas and get away from him because he was coming full tilt. I carried a wooden baseball bat on me for the rest of the season after that.

When I set the traps I drove the truck across pasture and all the cows and and a couple of horses came across the pasture and kept sticking there noses I the back of the truck and licking the front bumper. I had my son walk down the outside of the fence and get ther attention. I ran out and got I the truck and drove across the pasture and out the gate. Then my son walked all the way around the pasture
I told the farmer about it and he said "they won't hurt you they are just curious"

So when I would go check the traps i would walk across the center of the pasture, to cows were always at one end or the other. One day I'm walking across the pasture after I go over a hill and about 70 yards from the fence I hear critters running at me l turn and see the whole fricken herd coming at me and two closing fast. The fence is electric so as I'm running faster than I've run since high school over 30 years earlier. I'm making a plan in my head as I'm closing on the fence I'm looking for a dip or washout or something as I know I'm too fat to jump over the fence I spot a dip and as I'm baseball sliding I toss my trap bag over the fence. I stop about two feet past the fence and look at the fence as the lead two stop right at the fence and start snorting at me

Daddy raised cattle, had sixty head at one point. My favorite cowboy in tool was a long handled shovel. Good for poking and prodding around the pens and loading. But if one got out of hand you could always swap ends and swing for the fences.

ok;was working govt adc in south dakota on a complaint....was about 200 yds inside a huge pasture calling on a dead cow carcass...wind blowin across prairie as always,,,,stopped and thru out a coyote challenge bark and howl,,,stopped...thought i heard something...over the rise in front of me about 150 yds came a herd charging me. I took for the fence and made it barely. Crawled out and called it a day!!!

I was on vacation in Utah and Colorado last week. Hiking in the la sal mountains, a cow came charging down the trail at us, huffing and puffing. I was ready to blow it's brains out, but luckily lots of yelling changed it's mind before we crossed that bridge.

Haven’t had one charge me on a trapline, but worked around a fair number of them with attitudes. Generally I’ve found the run away method is just asking to get hurt one way or another. Stand your ground best you can, and if he’s set on you a couple solid pops on the snout is enough to deter most of them.

Bulls one can see and when you know where they are one can manage around them. I don't have many properties with bulls. I remember not paying attention on property with flocks of sheep and modern day large rams can hit pretty hard. I had to cross an area where the flock was and now do that with a vehicle when the ground is hard and not walk it when the sheep are out there. If the sheep are there and it is wet I let the fields on the other side go for that season.

Traps will double as mumchuks im to old and fat to be running from a cow! I might climb a tree for self preservation

I'd take a bull over a first calf heifer any day. But a lot of the times, in my experience, when the whole herd comes they are just curious. If you stand your ground they'll stop. Run and they get all excited. I hate to turn my back to cattle. I can usually read its next move well before it does it, so I'd prefer to watch it.
With that being said, I have been run out by new moms a couple times

Never a bull for me, but a first calf heifer. The farmer and I were riding around looking at the property and we came upon a heifer that was down and looked to be in bad shape. She was up on the flat top of a small hill and we walked up there to see a big still born calf and her laying on her side. About that time she sprung to her feet with fire in her eyes. We both turned to take off for the truck and I kid you not my boot hung in a vine growing on the ground on my first step and I went to the ground. I could hear her coming so I rolled out of her path. She hit the top of my boot with her head and went on down the hill. I got very lucky. I've been around em my whole life and this is about the only close call i've had with them.

No, I haven't but I know many that are and have been busted up from charging bull/cattle while working them. While hunting or trapping I always give them their space and move or go around.

I had a pasture full of bulls last fall that I hunted and none of them wanted me there. LOL

I've had a couple brushes with bulls, and they have always been holstein bulls that caused the trouble! The cows on this place I trapped were sweet, but he had two bulls that were a hand full. I had trapped on him for many years, and he warned me about those two, and I always kept an eye on them, and luckly I didn't have as serious a run in as others on here telling about, but at different times both chased me in my yota, and I just sped away from them.

Was calling in Wy one time, two mule deer does came in and were flailing at me with their front hooves. I thought I was gonna have to take one or both of them out for a little bit! I ended up standing up, and that seemed to bring them to their senses!

Been there done that Lee,,agree on holstein bulls too. Had one try to h--p me had to knock him down with 2x4...thought i killed him. Was getting ready to go in and call butcher when he popped up!!!

Holstein bulls are about the worst breed of bull there is. Guy was killed by one here 10 or 15 years ago.

I've gotten run over by cows while I am working a new calf, never had any problems with bulls yet...knock on wood!

A farmer was gored to death by HIS bull just last week here. The 4th I can remember in my area in the last two decades or so.

Pigs----no one mentioned pigs!!!!! Boy have I been chased by those suckers when I was a kid!!! I will no knowing it enter a pig enclosure again!!!!!!!
