I bought a chocolate lab on March 24/18. He was born feb 2/18. Training has been going awesome I think! First dog I have ever owned myself or tried to train. Been fortunate he isn’t much for chewing on stuff that’s not his. Only had one gym bag chewed on. But he has lots of energy and I commit close to a hour each night to training and excersising him. He is used to the gun already and retrieved a pigeon that I shot the other day and caught a crippled snow goose from along a slough last weekend. Just bought him a dog blind and trying to simulate hunting situation. Get him to lay in the blind flap the good flag in front of him for a bit throw out 1-3 dummies and make him wait for around 30 seconds before sending him to fetch.

This is my little pup in training, I have had her for just over two weeks, and she is awesome! She sits and as of a couple days ago she lets me know when she has to go to the ladies room lol. She chases and eats bugs like a champ too. Next week we begin upping the training.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Sask its a lot of work but you will be far ahead and it will be well worth it. I paid $1800 to have my lab trained and after the fact and with all the info out there I wished I'd done it myself. I paid too much for what I got and in the end it was still a huge dedication on my part to keep it going. Great looking dog and good luck, enjoy the ride. My lab goes everywhere with me.

My chocolate is 2 years old. Trained her myself. First time for me. I’ve put in a lot of effort and learned a ton in the last two years.

Training is sequential. It is all based upon obedience then builds one step at s time. It isn’t possible to complete the more advanced task if the dog isn’t fully committed to the earlier task. I followed Smartwork’s. Worked great for me.

I remember the photo of him on the drive home with your glove.

Everything you do with him means the world to him. He will be all the better hunter and friend for it. You have him well on his way.

I have trained labs and have a great facility. Just no labs right now so a bunch of empty kennels. I lost my last two and haven’t been able to find what I want.

Keep enjoying each other!

Thanks guys. It’s been a blast. Couldn’t imagine my life without him. I am super excited to get him on some geese. Less then a month away here!! Took him to the lake and had home practicing his retrieving in the water. That was a first for him. He did awesome. Longest one was close to 40 yards out there
