So, a husky dog wandered into my shop today. He's very friendly, had no colar or anything, and was very underfed. He's home with me now. I'm wanting to keep him, but I've never trained a non-hunting dog. I've always had bird dogs. Is there any difference to training just a pet? Thanks.

No. Train him basic obedience the way you would any dog. The basic commands of sit, stay and come are the foundation for any further training you might wish to do.

Like Lugnut said then he will train you on what he is willing to do. Each dog is as much an individual as we humans.

I would treat that dog like a puppy. Give him a chance to get to know you and trust you. Nothing but positive reinforcement for a few months. Treats and praise. Being fair with your dog will go a long way towards developing that trust. Any pressure conditioning would come after puppy training and after you have done the teaching.

I wouldn't go a few months myself. The first week is the get to know one another period and allow the pup to get adjusted to everything, and then start with one command rewarded with a treat. Once that one is down pat, add another while still doing the first command and so on. IMO, after the first week you don't want to scare the dog but you do have to begin giving them assurance that your the alpha.

Tell him he must ride in the truck bed and sleep in his own bed.
