My daughter is to leave for college in a week. After this Molly Tibbetts girl going missing I really wanted to get her set up with permit to carry. Then found out that she is not able to till 21. Not sure if I want to do this but feel like I should make her take the class and arm her anyway and face the conquences if she gets caught. She is a rule following girl so I’m sure she would not want to do that. So wil probably end end up getting a taser I assume that is not allowed at colllege also?

I have not had really any talks with her yet about safety. and I’m not really knowleble of what to watch for other than just stay away from any man. And usually she listens but like any kid thinks it can’t happen to her.

So I’m open to all good advice that will keep her safe and live a lifestyle that any teen will be ok with in the age of Snapchat and all other socia media

Pepper spray a size that would make a bear puke, a stun gun and some personal defense training would go a long ways to let you sleep at night.

Most campuses will not allow for any type of carry other than pepper spray. Make sure to check campus regulations because being caught could result in being expelled and potential charges depending on the school.

It's a shame that our kids have to keep their heads on a swivel but they must keep aware of their surroundings. It also sucks that our 18-21 year olds are denied the right to carry to protect themselves. I would have a talk with her about staying aware of her surroundings and watching closely what she post online. Also, maybe some kind of self defense class that you both could do together. Life today is a whole different ballgame compared to when we came up. Good luck!

What state is she going to. Check the laws . But one piece of advice is to tell her to NEVER EVER go out ANYWHERE by herself. Make a good friend and travel ,walk, shop, etc with another person. MOST abductions happen to a single person.

Man it's a hard thing to predict where lighting will strike. If you live like your the one going to be licked by the dog, bit by the tick, or struck by lighting and die! Your going to be living pretty sheltered life. Really anyone can get blind sided..
That said.
What I tried to teach my kids growing up was situational awareness. Which direction and were to run,and what to run from, when to fight all stops pulled..
Your daughter may already be better at that than you know. But just talking about it with her or maybe even get her in a class..
Years ago I used to be an assistant instructor for a class for women. What we call back then in the 1980s "Rape Prevention" and it was taught threw the YWCA. I haven't been involved with it myself for many years now. The class is still taught though by the same man that started it, that I helped. It has morphed now, grown and is called "WISE"
I'd never say gun or tazer idea is off the table. But in the collage environment would probably become a bigger issue than actually the odds of getting attacked.
See if they have any classes at the school or in the area of the WISE Type..

X2 on martial arts pepper spray. Knife is always good. If she's walking to her car put the exposed car key between fingers with a closed fist. My friends wife always does that and landed up being attacked one night she punched and stabbed the guy at the same time.

Good luck with that if she's into partying and clubbing. That seems to be where most of the problems with campus life begin. If she has good principals and some common sense she will probably be just fine. How the upcoming years play-out may be a reflection on how she was raised. However, I've seen good kids go bad, and bad kids go good so you just never really know.
In the long-run young people who have been raised right and then veer off track during their college years almost always find their way back.

That's another thing I would talk to her about. Kids are kids and they very well may want to experiment. I would mention to go with as many friends as possible and NEVER accept a open drink from anyone!!

I wouldn't over react, Mollie Tibbetts is 1 of 100,000 (or 500,000) or so college students, you can spend your life worrying about what "might" happen. That said, my daughter is going to college next year about 2 hours from home and she will have a Glock in a safe bolted in the trunk of her car. If she breaks down or is traveling home, she'll have it in the front seat. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6... She's alert and savvy, but we refuse to live our lives in fear.

Sad indeed that our government has the POWER to tell us that we cannot arm our young people under 21 years old. Interesting, I bet no president's daughters had to worry about this conversation when they went to college, because our tax dollars paid for them to have their own professional body guards (Secret Service).
So are the government's children more precious than the commoners?
I think I would get her a concealed handgun and not worry about it. If concealed is done right, no one would ever know she carried!
I know I am crazy, I just think the commoner's are just as important as the elite- sorry Hillary:(

Good luck and may God protect your precious daughter!

Don't fool your self a LOT happens on campus today it has come to the forefront in the last 10-15 years but was seldom reported in the past to protect the schools. Be prepared at all times and have a plan, a ballistic pen might be handy also and is easy to have handy.

She is going to an institution so prepare for it and hope she never needs any of it but don't put her in position of being unprepared and having to live with that the rest of her/your life.

Last thing I want to hear is there’s people walking around with a gun because daddy made me. That’s an accident waiting to happen for sure.
I want to believe people walking around town with a gun on their hip or in their purse have it because they themselves know exactly what to do with it if needed, and no chance of forgetting that they have it either. They better have confidence, and your daughter will not convince me after a crash course a week before college.

If you give your daughter a gun for college I bet it goes missing within a week.

Some easy Things to change, I observed on campus when My Daughter was there.

Pay attention: No Ear Phones in the ears while walking/moving/driving.

Pay attention: No Reading Texts/Twitter/Emails/ect while Walking/moving/driving.

Be suspicious: That nice guy is not necessarily a nice guy...Not all Predators look like Predators and they don't wear a sign identifying them...Even nice guys can be jerks or "misread signals"

Have a Party Buddy also Known to the Predators as a C*** Blocker (Someone who will observe the Designated driver rules and will help to prevent you from making a bad decision) that you can trust if going out to partake in the social miss adventures. NOT ONE Party Buddy for the group, Herding Drunk chicks is like herding cats. Better Yet Don't go to the party or bars Nothing good happens there.

Don't leave a drink unattended at a table or bar

Don't be alone with someone who you have not been around in many different situations.

Just a start.

trapper4 the government is not supposed to have that authority. it does now because somehow people believe they are protected by that government much more than they actually are. much much more. its a fact to scary for many to contemplate
